Depends on the restaurant. From a universal perspective, however, if they serve bread (or pita, tortillas or the equivalent thereof) that is, more often than not, a good indication of how the rest of the food will be.
A wonderfully spicy meal at Jitlada in east Hollywood, which I agree with Zagat as them being truly one of the best (if not THE best) Thai restaurants in the LA area. In addition to the food, the owner and her staff are warm, friendly &accomodating.

Jitlada (east Hollywood), Tender Greens, Frito Misto (Santa Monica), California Fish Grill in Gardena but either before 11:45 or after 1:30, unless you have time to wait in line. I will report more as I remember them or find them, whatever the case.
I couldn't think of a good reason not to join.
