Basic Navigation for the Kayaker
This fun and informative workshop is something you only get at a paddling symposium so we're lucky to be able to offer this to our
Wet Dog members.
Description: This navigation event is designed to be fun and make you feel more confident on the water by possessing these useful paddling as well as life skills. We produced this class in June and broke it up into two different days, but discovered that learning is accelerated when you can reinforce the skills in the same day.
We'll gather up at Bicentennial Park for a workshop on the fundamentals of navigation. Terry Hobbs of Severn Kayaking and Carolina Mike will host this workshop under the pavilion in the morning at 10 am to about 2pm. After class we'll hit Jack Willies for fellowship and cold ones.
We'll do a short ice breaker and then go over a brief history of navigation. You'll learn - what a magnetic compass is, the difference between True North vs Magnetic North, Variation, Deviation, Course, Heading, Bearing, Tides and Tidal Theory, Earth and Sun Effect, Spring Tides and Neap Tides. These are all very useful in paddling as well as hiking, biking and light trekking. Note: We will NOT be using any modern devices. This will all be hand drawn as if you were in a kayak with a chart. Beginners and up will enjoy this class. Approx. 4hr workshop.
This is a two part workshop 1st half is on land in the morning and the 2nd half is on the water a the park using the many mangrove trails just off the lake.
