Basic Navigation for the Kayaker

Basic Navigation for the Kayaker

This fun and informative workshop is something you only get at a paddling symposium so we're lucky to be able to offer this to our

Wet Dog members.

Description:
This navigation event is designed to be fun and make you feel more confident on the water by possessing these useful paddling as well as life skills.  We produced this class in June and broke it up into two different days, but discovered that learning is accelerated when you can reinforce the skills in the same day.

We'll gather up at Bicentennial Park for a workshop on the fundamentals of navigation.  Terry Hobbs of Severn Kayaking and Carolina Mike will host this workshop under the pavilion in the morning at 10 am to about 2pm.  After class we'll hit Jack Willies for fellowship and cold ones.

We'll do a short ice breaker and then go over a brief history of navigation.  You'll learn - what a magnetic compass is, the difference between True North vs Magnetic North, Variation, Deviation, Course, Heading, Bearing, Tides and Tidal Theory, Earth and Sun Effect, Spring Tides and Neap Tides.  These are all very useful in paddling as well as hiking, biking and light trekking. Note: We will NOT be using any modern devices. This will all be hand drawn as if you were in a kayak with a chart. Beginners and up will enjoy this class. Approx. 4hr workshop.

This is a two part workshop 1st half is on land in the morning and the 2nd half is on the water a the park using the many mangrove trails just off the lake.

Limited sign ups so RSVP now to get in on this Fun & Exciting workshop!

Cost: $55 per person if renting a kayak. (includes all materials needed, charts, compasses, etc) $30/ person if bringing your own kayak.  Please put in your appropriate amount owed for your situation.

Bring:
Water, a cold drink or snack if needed, lunch, sandals or water shoes, light clothing.  We'll eat lunch at noon under the pavilion and then after class hit Jack Willies for some needed cold ones.

Please note there is no discount for this class if you are a Wet Dog Supporter due to us having to buy certain things for this class like books and compasses . Half off rentals are only for half day trips rentals. If you are RSVPd for the class please make your full payment today or tomorrow before the class so we can cover the books and supplies purchased. Thanks, we're going to have fun out there!

Hi mike. Through PayPal I think I have a $21.00 credit for a kayak rental I cancelled and a $30 credit for the 2nd part of the navigation class on the water that I cancelled. I still have the materials from the last class so don't need them again. Am I good for the money or am I supposed to pay? Thx

Hey Deb, sorry didn't reply earlier. Your fine for the credit. Just let us know what trip or event you'd like to transfer it too. Sorry you couldn't make the class.

Great class and trip. Everyone left with a better sense of direction and how to navigate through compass and observation.

It was a great course. And Mary you were a great captain (and Britt a great co-captain). And now that you have your own compass, no telling where you two might go! Thanks for guiding us in a great adventure. And Mike and Terry, Thank You for showing us how to get around in this world. Great morning and afternoon. Everyone should definitely take this course.

The Basic Navigation for the Kayaker was a great course and well worth attending. Thank you Terry Hobbs and Carolina Mike! I knew nothing about compass or navigation at start of the class; and after this course, I have the confidence to go out and practice using skills taught on land and water. The first 2 hours were class time and then 2+ hours on the water practicing what we were taught in class which was invaluable. In addition, we were each given a print out manual that covered what we were taught in the course. I would definitely recommend taking this course. Thanks, agaon, Terry and Carolina Mike for making this course informative but also enjoyable (you both have a lot of patience, too!).
