Carolina Mike's & MJ's 14th Annual Shell Island Birthday Kayak & Camp

Hey Wet Dogs come join Carolina Mike and Mj for a fun filled weekend for our 13th Annual Birthday Kayak & Camp-out on Shell Island.  The original Trip in April was cancelled due to weather so this is the make up trip.

This all started after the 1st year I started kayaking. We would just paddle out to Shell Island to relax and enjoy island life on my favorite local island for my birthday. People began to ask me if they could come out and camp with us. This slowly became an event over the past years. Now we're into our fourteenth year of hosting and catering this event. Ironically every year there are always others on the trip with the same birth date. We've entertained over 300 people in the month of April the last 12 years on this special salty piece of paradise. Beginners and up welcome- kayaks and tents for rent if needed.

Note: The meetup location is located on the right side of the road in the grassy area (There is no physical address) just before the last toll bridge that takes you to the boat ramp on Fort. Desoto.   IT IS NOT THE FORT DESOTO BOAT RAMP

Itinerary:

The gang will meetup on the grassy area near the mangroves and shore. Once there we'll pack the kayaks and gear and then paddle (45 min paddle for beginners) across the open mangrove flats. A pristine white sandy beach always greets the group as we arrive on the southwestern side of the island. Ft. Desoto has been voted the best beach in the USA a few years back. Well..., many sea kayakers in the know as well as we say Shell Island is the king of beaches.

Saturday: We'll all meetup at the put-in area and pack our kayaks for the trip.  After everyone gets there and in the water we'll go over a short safety briefing then paddle to the island. Once on the island we'll set up camp and then just hang out for awhile and just enjoy the island paradise.  Then around 1pm we'll saddle up and paddle to Billy's Stone Crab for a late lunch. We'll eat and drink in the crow's nest on the third floor in the open bar area as Jimmy Buffet music emanates from Travis's magical guitar. First one to win the hook game gets a free drink at the bar. Check out the pictures in the photos page of last years trip to see the fun we have on this weekend.

Later we'll head back to the Island for a delicious dinner of Australian Dinkum Chilli on the beach as Florida's best sunset. Night falls away as we sit and mingle by the roaring fire. Some may steal away for a walk up the beach. If we get lucky phosphorescence activity in the waves may illuminate the shores at night. Later on one by one people will leave the fire to retire to their tents to fall asleep to the soft waves lapping on the shore.

Sunday: You'll awake to the smell of breakfast and fresh coffee brewing. We'll enjoy the morning, clean and pack up for a short paddle home.

Cost: $99 if renting a kayak from us (includes kayaks and gear, Dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning,)  If paying by paypal put in the appropriate fee if you are renting a kayak.

$35 if bringing your own kayak  (includes dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning)

Special note: Some of you have paid already for the original trip and have a credit from that.  You know who you are.

Note: When paying for this trip put-in the price that pertains to you.  The $99 price will show up so you have to change it in paypal if that is not your option price.  We will not after the fact give anymore credits if you do not put in the right price. Call us if any questions at[masked]

PLEASE LET US KNOW in words in your RSVP weather you are renting or bringing your own kayak.     Example: Sounds awesome, count me in. I will be needing a kayak for this trip.  Also if bringing a guest please give us a name in your rsvp.

We'll have vegetarian options if your a veggie wet dog.

Please let us know in your rsvp.

NO GIFTS PLEASE!

Things to bring: water, sunscreen, camera, bug spray, appropriate kayaking clothing, rain gear, tent, water shoes or sandals, NO FLIPFLOPS, money for Billy's Stone Crab.

Only those who RSVP with yes and a full payment will truly be signed up for this trip. Some of you have paid already for the original trip and have a credit. Space is limited so don't wait to RSVP.  This trip always fills up. You don't want to miss out on this annual event. RSVP NOW!!! to secure your spot.

Hi Carolina Mike. I am so sorry I missed this trip. I saw some of the pictures and it looks so fun. But I have never kayak camped before. So I am happy you are thinking about having a workshop so I can make the next one. Kathleen

Can everyone let me know if they are using their credit from the Bday Kayak & Camp in April. I see some members aren't yet paid for this trip, but I know they may have already paid from the April trip. It's easier then going in Paypal to figure it out. Just send me a personal email please [masked] Thanks.

This is an EXHAUSTIVE list, aka, things to consider, NOT everything they absolutely need:

This is only one night and we're cooking the food. All you need is your plate, cup and fork and spoon for kitchen items. Pack light.

Sorry this is so late. I have a tent but it's for 4 people if anyone would like to share/lighten the load.
Also, anyone want to "pack together" i.e., I'll bring TP & toothpaste, you bring something else? Just a thought if anyone is interested!
I'm driving from Odessa if anyone wants a ride, but I only have room for my kayak as I have a small car :-(
    REALLY liking forward to this!!!

I would like to come to this, but I have a real lack of gear... No tent, no boat shoes, think I have a sleeping bag in the attic....if anyone has an extra small tent to lend/rent, I think I can find the cash for some boat shoes...

I have never kayak/camped before. Any advise from those that are experienced on items you wish you had brought or items that you didn't need/use? I'm trying to keep packing to the bare essentials so I don't sink the kayak! I'm looking at the warm temps & the thought of a sleeping bag seems too hot. Thanx.

Dry bags(WalMart) camping section or trash bags work...... If you plan for a dunking you'll be more comfortable...... For example wet sleeping bag would be bad since a trash bag could have saved it. Real dry bags for things like cell phones, change or clothes, food, paper products, etc. Dunking happens even to the most experienced. Dry compartments are .............most of the time. ......Anything stored on top needs to be tied to the boat with a positive tie. Bungees sometimes let go in the excitement.

If all you have is a sub-zero bag I'd think it too hot.
