ROMPS trip on the Little Manatee River

ROMPS trip (River of the Month Paddles)

This month were exploring the Little Manatee River. The river is located in southeastern Hillsborough County and flows from swampy beginnings near the town of Fort Lonesome for nearly 40 miles to Tampa Bay south of Ruskin.  The lower part of the river is influenced by the tide in Tampa Bay.  This river is often confused with the larger and wider Manatee River located not too far south of this river, but in my opinion this is a much better paddle near a more remote wilderness and the water is so much clearer and beautiful in color.

Itinerary:

We'll put-in at the end of 24th St. SE just before Sun City on College Ave. and paddle up stream a few miles towards the Little Manatee State Park.  We'll find a spot for lunch and relax and enjoy nature.   After lunch we'll put-in and paddle back.  After the trip we'll drive to a local watering hole for more fellowship. Beginners and up will enjoy this paddle trip. Approx. 7 miles up and down river.

Directions to put-in spot: If coming from the Pinellas side take 275 south over the Skyway Bridge and take a left on US 41 towards Ruskin. You'll be traveling under the bay along 41 all the way to Ruskin, FL (located South of Apollo Beach)  In Ruskin take College Ave right or east traveling towards Sun City. Just before Sun City Center look for 24th St. NE on the right.  Take this south 5 miles or so and it will end at the river and put-in spot.  There is limited Parking so perhaps carpooling would be suggested.

If traveling from Tampa: Take US 41 past Gibsonton, Apollo Beach and through Ruskin. Take a left on College Ave. or east traveling towards Sun City. Just before Sun City Center look for 24th St. NE on the right.  Take this south 5 miles or so and it will end at the river and put-in spot.

Cost: If renting a kayak $40 (includes all gear) Half off rental fee if current 2012 "Paid Wet Dog Supporter.     FREE if bringing your own kayak.

Note: If  "Paid Wet Dog Supporter" it is up to you to change the price that you pay in the payment box on Paypal.  We will not after the fact give anymore credits if you do not put in the right price.  Also if bringing your own kayak  just hit the OK button when rsvping please.    Only Wet Dog members with their own kayak paddle for FREE! If you bring a guest with their own kayak there is a $15 fee.

PLEASE LET US KNOW in words in your RSVP weather you are renting or bringing your own kayak.    Example: Sounds awesome, count me in. I will be needing a kayak for this trip.  Also if bringing a guest please give us a name in your rsvp.

Things to bring:  Water, sunscreen, lunch, water shoes or sandals (preferably with a heel strap), (CROCs are not recommended) rain gear if you have it, light clothing for paddling.

Call Mike at[masked] if any questions on rsvping or questions about the trip.

If anyone is interested, I was planning to do a short hike at this Preserve near the paddle site. Nothing intense. Just a chance to check-out a Scrub Preserve that I have heard about and never had the chance to explore. After Paddle Hike - Balm Boyette Scrub Preserve:

For those "Wet Dogs" wanting to stretch your legs after the paddle, Asst. Organizer Jim will be doing a short hike at this Preserve in nearby Lithia. Probably only 2 - 3 miles to see what plants/animals are around.

After Paddle Hike Directions: Visit the Hillsborough County website:

Is there a launch fee at the Outpost for those with their own boats?
About how long is the paddle, 2-3 hrs I'm guessing?

    Yea Tracy,
Rent from Mike tomorrow, if you've never done this he can help you out a lot. Find out what he may have to offer and watch Craigs List. You can pick up really good boats that way at a great price. I did and so did many others here.
I just took two minutes and found a nice looking 14' Dagger for $400
    http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/boa/3443137331.html
and a really nice 15'6" Percetion for $399

    Happy hunting :)

I have a old kayak/wide bottom and may not be able to keep up if this is a fast river. (Use to paddling casually on the Hillsborough.) Comments appreciated!
