It's Earth Day - Paddle and Cleanup

  • Apr 22, 2012 · 10:00 AM

What: Wet Dogs it's time to give back to mother earth. We'll celebrate Earth Day with a nearby paddle clean up on Cross Bayou. The Bayou runs north and south along the lower end of Lake Seminole and is a awesome hidden paddling gem.  Cross Bayou is fed by the the Gulf waters from John's pass along the inter-coastal waters near Bay Pines and runs up past Park Blvd.  It spreads out towards the souther reaches of Lake Seminole and has numerous mangrove trails and islands.  Trash gets caught up in these mangroves from the rain run off and high tides.

We'll put-in at the new kayak and canoe launch at the end of 102nd Ave in Pinellas Park and paddle down the bayou towards the Cajun Cafe located on Park Blvd.  After the paddle cleanup we'll eat a late lunch at the Cajun Cafe.  Beginners and up welcome.

Note: We'll have ten kayaks available for those needing a kayak.  Please let us know whether you need a kayak or are bringing your own in your RSVP.

When: 10 am on Sunday, April 22nd

Where: kayak and canoe launch at northern end of Cross Bayou canal at end of 102nd Ave. in Pinellas Park.  Directions: take 66th St south to 102nd Ave N.  Take a right and drive a few blocks to the end and launch point.

Bring: gloves or cleaning gloves, trash bags, water, cash for Cajun Cafe after paddle

MOTHER EARTH thanks all who showed up. It was touch and go on the weather so we understand if you were signed up and didn't show. This is a hidden paddle down the center of Pinellas County and is very nice route. Everyone was up for cleaning and getting dirty for Mother Earth today and for that Wet Dog thanks you. The food and company was great at "The Cajun Cafe." FYI don't ask for the corn bread without knowing it's $9.00 :)

Little rain, little sunshime and some clouds. Good time giving back a little to nature by way of picking up a little trash. Only 7 showed up but all were hard workers and removed approx. 7 large trash cans full of human debris. Lots of water bottles, styro cups, tennis balls by the dozens and lots of other trash. Still lots of trash to clean up. This is the second clean up in this area in the last two weeks and lots more to go. As usual, Mike leads a good safe trip.

I agree Kym and Lisa. Right now it looks kinda iffy weather this is going to go down. (misspelled whether intended) The restaurant is awesome and shouldn't be missed because of a little weather.

Carolina, if you decide to cancel the cleanup tomorrow based on the weather, Kym and I think it would be fun for the group to at least go to lunch at noon at celebrate Earth Day :-)

Hey everybody, Mike is providing up to ten rental kayaks. We know the weather looks bad. He will make a call on it tomorrow.
