What: Lake Rousseau - River of the Month Paddle
This man made lake is near the Rainbow River and has a interesting history. We choose this lake because it has the Rainbow beauty with a more rural setting and not as crowded. Lake Rousseau was formed in the 1920's by the construction of a dam on the Withlacoochee River near Inglis. Later, it was selected to be a significant part of the ill-fated Cross-Florida Barge Canal, that political 'football' which showed the incompetence of Government to manage a program.
There are several spots that have a hanging canopy of trees for shade, but most of the paddle is quite open and can get very hot. We suggest you bring plenty of cold water and sunscreen, and head protection. Paddle difficulty: moderate but it can be a long paddle for those with smaller boats. Approx. 8 miles round trip. We are putting in and taking out at the same spot.
Where: Levy County near Rainbow and Withlachoochee Rivers.
When: July 21st at 10:00 am
Sorry there are no kayak rentals available for this trip.
The launch is not hard to find; if you enter the address in your gps you shouldn't have any trouble. I (Kym) will be staying the weekend in Inverness so I can't lead a convoy from Pinellas County. Since we all come from different places, Lisa and I decided to just plan on meeting everyone at the launch at 10:00 (address above). Anyone who lives near each other and wants to convoy and/or carpool, feel free to discuss and come up with a plan in the comment section.
