Homosassa River Manatee Trip

  • Feb 2, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • McRae's Motel

Join us on this Fun, Exciting Treasure to view Manatees of Florida. Homosassa River is famous for two things; manatee's and the people who come to view them. And during the winter months of December to March, you can expect to find plenty of both. The freshwater spring fed river is a favorite wintering spot for the West Indian Manatee. Paddle Difficulty: An easy paddle for the beginner and up. Kayaks available for rent.

Where: McRae's Motel and Boat ramp off Yulee Drive (CR 490) Homosassa, FL (about 1 1/2 hrs drive from St. Petersburg, FL. Plan for traffic on US 19. ) Better way to go is up the Suncoast highway. A few tolls but will cut a least 20 minutes off travel time.

Cost: Only $45.00/ person if renting a kayak (includes all gear) FREE if you have your own kayak.

Payment policy: We need to know who is coming on trips so we will be requiring everyone if renting please prepay for rentals two days in advance in order to get an accurate count.

Refund Policy

Note: We'll eat lunch near the manatee viewing area up on the bridge embankment. Also join us after the paddle for drinks and or dinner at the Monkey Bar Restaurant located next to the McRae's Hotel on the water.

Directions: Travel North on US 19 to the town of Homosassa Springs and turn west on Yulee Drive (County Road 490). Take left at stop sign and follow signs to the Yulee Sugar Mill ruins. Stay on Yulee until reaching MacRae's Motel. A boat ramp and dock are available to the public at no charge. (parking is down the street from Hotel.) Save time on travel and take the Sun Coast Highway towards Homosassa. (about a half hour time saved compared to US 19)

Things to bring: Lunch, water, camera, sunscreen, appropriate kayaking clothing, water shoes or sandals. Call us on our cell at[masked] if questions, but keep in mind reception is spotty near this area on the day of the trip.

Best paddle ever. There must have been a hundred manatees and several of us got to pet them. The water and weather were perfect and Julie was an excellent leader.

Wow - most amazing trip! Sitting in the middle of literally about 100 manatees. Can't even tell you how awesome that was.

Carol, two days before the trip, but then there's no guarantee you'll get a kayak. First come first serve on the kayak rentals.
