Holden Rhododendron Hike and Cook out.

One of the most spectacular markers for the changing of the seasons is found in the Rhododendron Gardens t Holden Arboretum. http://www.holdenarb.org/visit/garden-collections-maps.asp#

Our hike will be through Holden's 25 acres of spectacular blooming Rhododendrons followed by Pierson Creek trail returning to enjoy a potluck picnic and cook out in a beautiful setting beside Foster Pond.

Bring your favorite grilling items and a dish to share for the picnic after the hike. We will bring charcoal, ice and grilling equipment.

Parking is on the left immediately after the entrance. We will assemble here. Restrooms are in the Visitors Center. Hike assembly time is 9:30.  Please arrive  early enough to allow time for all the last minute prehike preparation. There is a $7 admission charge. We will collect for the admission charge as we assemble.

We look forward to seeing everyone there

Cloyce, I have a question - Holden Arboretum is running an admission special through Living Social. Can we use that discount with this group?

Joanna, I am out of the state right now but you can check directly with the folks at Holden. They know we are coming and we are listed either under WhyNot or Ryland. Cloyce

    Hike Distances
For those who have asked: Rhododendron Garden-- about 1 mile ( a walk in the park) Pierson Creek--- about 2 miles, a walk through the woods and along Pierson Creek. long stairs going down and back up from the valley, stream crossing over and back. Pace is for enjoyment, not conditioning.

Here are our historic directions: From Cleveland take I-90 east to Mentor (Kirtland Exit 193) and turn right on SR-306. Continue on SR-306 to the bottom of the hill and turn left on SR-615. At the first traffic light, turn right on Kirtland-Chardon Road. Travel 3.6 miles to Sperry Road and turn left. Travel 1.4 miles and turn left on the main drive to reach the Warren H. Corning Visitor Center.

Note the Sunday June 1 date. We had to thread the needle of competing activities at Holden, rhododendron blooming, and hike leader schedules.
