This group is for beginning-to-advanced outdoor enthusiasts interested in continuing to build their wilderness chops. Through workshops and trips members learn and practice skills for treading effectively, safely, comfortably, and respectfully in the extraordinary beauty of the backcountry.
There is no fee to join. Workshops are affordable, fee-based experiences. Trips--during which members can work on and ask questions about backcountry skills--are free. All members get free access to online instructional materials.
Most workshops and trips are led by Skip Spitzer, Principal of Getting Deeper into the Wilderness. A skilled and experienced facilitator, educator and outdoorsman, Skip has been hiking and backpacking enthusiastically for more than 30 years. Outside of Getting Deeper into the Wilderness, he leads trips for several hiking and backpacking groups. Skip is certified in Wilderness First Aid by the Wilderness Medicine Institute.
“Wow, I can't give enough praise for the backpacking trip with Skip!! Didn't want it to end! I learned something about every possible aspect of staying in the wilderness, before and all during the trip from group teaching and one-to-one conversations. Besides his smarts and skills, Skip is also kind and endlessly patient, and pulls tricks out of his hat when needed.”
