Sheffield Garden Walk

Please join us at noon on Sunday as we wander the secret gardens of the Sheffield/Depaul Neighborhood!

There is a $7 donation required to tour the gardens, payable at the gate to the festival organizers.  This is not a Windy City Explorers charge.

This is one of our coolest events because of the access to dozens of "secret gardens" in the backyards of private homes!

Look for our group right in front of the church at noon. Feel free to call or text Tom's cellphone if you are running late. (312) 725-0223.

Come explore the Lincoln Park/DePaul neighborhood during the 45th Annual Sheffield Garden Walk! I have done this before and can attest to some beautiful secret urban gardens at these homes.

We'll meet at noon in front of St. Vincent DePaul Church and grab a bite to eat before we head out on a tour of the gardens. Because of the tight quarters in these private gardens, we will break up into groups of ten or so as we tour the area.  We would never fit as a large group into these gardens.... but we will spread out and walk along together on the route.

Some of you may wish to attend a couple of excellent architectural tours that will be running during the festival.  Those tours are offered by the festival organizers starting at 1pm and 3pm.  You need to arrive at the festival and sign up for those tours at a specific booth. Check the festival link below for specific information, on the page labeled "Architectural Tours":

Appreciated your point of view, Therie. Face to face connections trump digital anytime!

Thank you Tom for letting us know about this event. I was in awe of the spirit of community for this great cause. Homeowners opening their gardens to complete strangers; one offered us wine, another was happy to talk plants. The massive volunteer effort to pull this off and the great program book. The industrious little girl with her 50 cent lemonade stand - who put the 75 cent stand out of business. The great sight of people of all ages, babies, dogs strolling the neighborhood. This is what I lament we need more of in this digital world.

Yes, I had hoped to see you there. Great description and insightful comments, Therie! See you soon.

The walk was great! The weather was very nice and breezy! Met some new great individuals, and made a new friendship! For me, it could not have been better! :-) Thanks to those whom I met, and above all thanks to Tom Besore for initiating this outing.

Oops, didn't spell-check my note to the group! I meant to say that I can't compare my experience about the Walk because this was a first time for me. Enjoyed the afternoon in the city!!

This was my first time at the Sheffield Garden Walk so I can do any comparisons. I enjoyed seeing the various gardens and appreciated the creative use of property. Thanks, Tom, for posting this event! I also partook of the architectural tour which for a Windy City Explorer was the perfect ending to a great afternoon!

Thanks Tom for making my Sunday a beautiful day. I agree re: the gardens but the great company made up for it.

    1 · July 21, 2013

  • Tom B.

The company was great! But the gardens were average this year... and unlike past years, only a few homeowners were outside mixing with guests. I think they are tired of all this after 45 years!

    Great walk, as always...

I will be there. Is there parking nearby? How long will the wall run?

    1 · July 21, 2013

    • Erica H.

check out the sheffiled garden walk website. It tells you where parking is. I have parked in the garage nearby and also have found street parking nearby in the past too. There is a special rate in the garage for the fest. Mention that when you park.

I think I'll have brunch at 11, at Ja Grill on Armitage and just off Sheffield, if anyone wants to join me before the walk!

What time does the event end? I have theater tickets for 3:00. Thanks.

I anticipate walking for a couple of hours before people start to disperse. Some may stay for the 3pm architectural tour ..... Others may stay all day to enjoy the music and food afterwards.

    Change of plans; working.
