Kenwood Walk

Joe Steffen will lead a 2.5 hour, 4.7 mile walk through the Kenwood neighborhood and landmark district of 19th-century houses and mansions, including those of Julius Rosenwald (Sears stores), Gustavus Swift (meatpacking), Elijah Muhammad (Nation of Islam), and President Barack Obama, following this route. We will walk even if it is raining, so bring an umbrella or poncho. Please do not bring your dog.

Directions: CTA: Take Bus 6 Jackson Park Express from downtown to 50th/Lake Park and walk south a short distance to the stoplight.
Metra: Take the Metra Electric District Line to the 51st/53rd (Hyde Park) station. Go out the north station exit, and walk west to the stoplight.
Driving: Take Lake Shore Drive to 47th St., go west to Lake Park Ave., and south to Hyde Park Blvd. There is limited free parking on Lake Park Ave. north of Hyde Park Blvd. Otherwise, street parking is $2/hour, 2 hours max, which isn't long enough.

Is the map still posted on the site? I'd like to revisit the tour route.

I tried the link on the main page for the tour, but got an error message.

Enjoyed the walk despite the rain. Look forward to returning to this area on a future walk.

Because we were caught in the heavy rain, I wasn't able to look more than fleetingly at a lot of places on the route. But it was nice to see my old neighborhood again, and a lot of familiar sights within it.

I was late and never caught up to the group but I followed the map and enjoyed my solo walk!!!

I am glad that I participated in part of the walking tour of the Kenwood neighborhood. It was just too darn wet out to really enjoy the sights. Thank you, Joe, for introducing me to the area and I will go back!

It was just a shame that it was not possible to actually keep the eyes focused on the stately homes because you had to keep watching the ground for where you would step into puddles. I was dripping wet when I got back to my apartment and had to throw the socks away, they were so wet and dirty. It would have been much more wonderful if it wasn't raining.

This is really a great walk but the weather today really put a damper on the day. Last years walk was glorious weather and we ran into Obama.

Lovely route for my first walk with this group, but with the downpour it took away some of the excitement. Know we can't control the weather. Agree with some of the other comments to schedule this tour again.

Well I wish it hadn't been sunny out here when I left this morning..... then I might have brought my umbrella... my bad.... I enjoyed the first mile of the walk before I huddled up with some new friends to shelter from the Rain.... Hopefully next year, the 3rd time will be the charm for this walk! :-)

Good quite interesting. No one can control the weather. Next time I will be better prepared with back pack and rain gear if it is a possibility.

Had it not rained I would never have gone to the gas station and met two cool people who also had no umbrella:-)

Rained out. I hid underneath an awning for 45 minutes and walked home. Can we do this tour again?

I was really looking forward to the walk, but I broke both my arms in a bicycle wreck last week and I'm just not up to walking for 3 hours yet. However, I'm sure I'll be ok for the next walk.

    August 30, 2013

    • Mac G.

Sorry to hear about your accident. My wife broke both her wrists last August. Took a while but she is fine now. Good luck to you!

      August 30, 2013

Not sure I can walk the this whole event. Is it ok do all I can then leave early? This group interests me.

    August 29, 2013

    • Joe S.

You can leave anytime if you can find your way back on your own. You should try a shorter walk first, like the upcoming Oak Park walk.

It will be my 1st time in this area so I'm looking forward to it!

Is there anyone interested in going to the Oriental Museum at University of Chicago, after the walk? They specialize in exhibits from Asia minor and North Africa (oriental in the classic sense). The last time I went there, admission was 7 dollars

    August 27, 2013

    • Alice

I think I will be too tired out by the end to walk any more. But, I do love the Oriental Institute.

I spent a lot of time at the OI when I was young; my mother was docent chair (the first, I believe) and I helped out in the Suq. I haven't been in ages but, unfortunately, won't be able to go after the walk.

      August 28, 2013

  • David R.

Admission fee is voluntary for OI
. I am going for lecture and reception on Sept. 4 at 7:00. RSVP on eventbrite or OI site.

Hi Joe, wish I could attend. If you are going by 4340 So. Oakenwald, I rehabbed the house from 2003 - 2006, complying with it's Historical Status. It's a bit of a sad story re: the previous owners, I'd be happy to share it with you sometime if interested.
