Wrightwood & Park West Walk

Joe Steffen will lead a 2.5 hour, 4 mile walk past many 19th-century mansions and townhouses in the Arlington & Roslyn Place and McCormick Row House Landmark Districts and throughout the Wrightwood and Park West neighborhoods in the Lincoln Park community area of Chicago, following this route. We will see the Biograph Theater, where bank robber John Dillinger was killed in 1934 by federal agents. We will also see the amazing interior of the Elks National Veterans Memorial. We will walk even if it is raining, so bring an umbrella or poncho. Please do not bring your dog.

Note: This walk starts at noon, not the usual 10 AM, because the Elks National Veterans Memorial doesn't open until noon.

Directions: CTA: Take the Brown or Red Line to Fullerton and walk 1 long block east to Halsted St.
Driving: Take Lake Shore Drive to the Fullerton exit, drive west to the Halsted, Fullerton, & Lincoln intersection. Street parking is $2/hour, 3 hours max.

If you arrive after we have departed, wait for us to return to the Meetup location at about 12:30 PM.

Same here, Tom! I wish I could have been there. Do you remember Ratso's?

Lived on the South Side then; went up North on dates going to the Biograph theatre, that white triangular building on the N.E. side of Fullerton which was a (consignment/used) furniture/furnishings store, Uncle Dan's surplus store, bookstores... Ratso's sorta sounds familiar and I'm thinking it was a restaurant.

Thanks, Joe, for another great 'explore.' Wow, for starters, it's been some 30+ years since I stood on the corner of Halsted and Fullerton.

A nice for a fall walk. Lots of Halloween spirit even though many trees are still green! Seeing the national Elk memorial made my day. Thanks Joe!

I'm in town on business and don't know anyone. Going to this Meetup us a little intimidating.

Deborah and Heather... we are a very down to earth group... not intimidating at all... my 12 year old niece has joined me on the last 4 walks and she thinks it's pretty cool....

Sorry to miss the last walk of the season, but I'll be busy at my motorcycle riding class!

Is this the last walk of this year, Linda? I didn't see that information on the description above. If that's true, I definitely have to join this walk.

I lead walks from April through October, but Tom Besore may do some walks in the winter.

I had really wanted to attend, but something came up and I won't be able to make it. :-(

I hope to join you! I used to live in that area, 30 or so years ago -before it got 'greened' !! I havent seen much of it since, and would love to revisit it, especially with a guide who could explain all the highlights!! :-)
