South Loop Walk

Joe Steffen will lead a 2 hour, 2.9 mile walk through the new Central Station residential neighborhood, the Prairie Avenue Landmark District, and the site of the infamous Levee, as described in the book Sin in the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys, and the Battle for America's Soul, following this route. We will walk even if it is raining, so bring an umbrella or poncho. Please do not bring your dog.

Directions: CTA: Take the Green, Orange, or Red Line to Roosevelt and walk 1.5 blocks east to Michigan Ave.
Metra: Take the Metra Electric District Line to the Museum Campus/11th St. station, walk west to Michigan Ave. and south 1 block to Roosevelt Rd..
Driving: Street parking last year was $2/hour, 3 hours max.

If you have a smart phone and are good with maps, touching the meet up location shows a map with a pinpoint on the exact location. Touching the phrase “following this route" shows the route map so you can try to find us if you are late.

Only 2.9 miles...felt like more but oh so good. Joe does an awesome job sharing history with us all and leading the pack...thank you soooo much.

A great day for a walk, Prairie Ave is still fun to see. As Joe said, the Glessner House is built like a fort, that's why it's still there. BTW, none of their neighbors liked it. Good commentary on everything by Joe. We walked up Michigan from Cermak and could not find any of the old auto dealers.

That is because we walked back on Wabash Ave., and the 2 blocks that we walked on Michigan Ave. from 20th to 22nd St. had only one of these buildings: http://webapps.cityof...

It was great. Perfect weather, easy pace. Explored an area in which I had not previously walked although I had been to the Glessner and Clark Houses. Started late, finished early. All was good.
