Kenwood Walk

Joe Steffen will lead a 2.5 hour, 4.7 mile walk through the Kenwood neighborhood and landmark district of 19th-century houses and mansions, including those of Julius Rosenwald (Sears stores), Gustavus Swift (meatpacking), Elijah Muhammad (Nation of Islam), and President Barack Obama, following this route. We will walk even if it is raining, so bring an umbrella or poncho. Please do not bring your dog.

Directions: CTA: Take Bus 6 Jackson Park Express from downtown to 50th/Lake Park and walk south a short distance to the stoplight.
Metra: Take the Metra Electric District Line to the 51st/53rd (Hyde Park) station. Go out the north station exit, and walk west to the stoplight.
Driving: Take Lake Shore Drive to 47th St., go west to Lake Park Ave., and south to Hyde Park Blvd. There is limited free parking on Lake Park Ave. north of Hyde Park Blvd. Otherwise, street parking is $2/hour, 2 hours max, which isn't long enough.

If you have a smart phone and are good with maps, touching the meet up location shows a map with a pinpoint on the exact location. Touching the phrase “following this route" shows the route map so you can try to find us if you are late.

beautiful area and beautiful day. nice guide. Perhaps telling us in advance about the route would be a bit more helpful... a few more stops. But, overall, nice job.

Another great walk with Joe. That was a pretty fancy neighborhood I've never seen and I appreciate the house, church, mosque architecture. Very nice group to walk with.

Another often missed neighborhood and so well worth going to. I especially loved hearing about/seeing the Jewish influence in the neighborhood, and learning about Mr. Kennicott, founder of Kenwood and the lesser known businessman who took over Sears, Roebuck. The architecture we saw, its embellishments, and the details are musts for lovers and students of architecture--one can fill an entire photo book just taking pictures of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Thanks to Joe for another well-led tour and all of the historical information.

My kids conspired against me this morning, and I am not going to make it. Very disappointed. I hope to make one soon.

Unfortunately, the buses are conspiring against me so I'll have to try again next year!

Sorry about the short notice for this walk; I know many people like to plan further ahead than one week. I'm traveling a lot this summer and wasn't sure if I'd be able to lead a walk on this date until today.

It might be a good thing--I have wanted to attend one of your tours before but once a hike exceeds around 60 people I can't hear the guide at all & the tour becomes a large walking group. Not criticizing, just explaining! Thank you for offering these interesting tours.
