Subject: [wine-218] You Missed A Fabulous Time This Weekend if You Didn't Make It!

Hi Wine and Food Lovers,
This was a fun fun weekend for the Houston Wine Tasters.  We had a small group who were able to recover from the previous night enough to buy local products early on a Saturday morning...have to admit, it was a challenge for me, but once I arrived at the Farmer's Market, it was fabulous. Among the items bought was a block of locally made white chocolate with spices, which was used for one of the appetizers at the Sunday evening blind tasting. Bruschetta was topped with slices of brie and then the chocolate was shaved into thin spices to top the brie. I believe the appetizer was described by one astute member as being "better than sex"!
The freshness of the produce was awesome, too, and it was such a beautiful afternoon that we ended up on the Hugo's vine covered patio area....we decided to try Hugo's controversial appetizer, Chapulines. That's the fried grasshoppers! The proper wine pairing is probably...Sauvignon Blanc? but we ignored that and went with Malbec.
Sunday Evening was the happening of the Pinot Noir Blind Tasting at Carl's. What a blast! Thanks again Carl for the beautiful setting and for being a great host! The winning wine was a Gloria Ferrer Pinot Noir, brought by both Kathy Hillery and Judy Wagner. Funny thing - Kathy's wine was #16, which received 6 votes, and Judy's was #1, which received only 1 vote! No one knew in advance, of course, who brought what wine, and it amazed me that the wine apparently got BETTER as the night went on! Also of interest is the fact that no one recognized the "ringer" wine which Tom Havron brought - it was a Malbec dressed in a Pinot Noir's "clothing"! Who knew? No one! LOL! Best appetizer prize was awarded to Jeanne Haner, who brought the deliciously tender pork chops with cherries! The white chocolate and brie bruschetta was runner up!
Judge for yourself and come on out to the 2nd in the Blind Tasting Series: Malbec. Carl is going to generously host that one, as well!
