Shiraz / Syrah and Grenache / Garnacha

Two of the most important grapes in the world.

Grenache and Garnacha:  Spicy.  Berry-flavored.  Pungent.  Chateauneuf du pape and Prioriat.

Syrah and Shiraz:  Blackberry and pepper.  Grown in the northern Rhone; Australia and South Africa.

Sometimes they're even blended with Mourvedre, also called Mataro.

We'll compare and see if you can guess.

What do you do?  Well the sparkling wine and the cleanup is $5.  but plan on bringing a $15-$25 wine and an appetizer.  There will be a stove for you to cook.  Our chef, John Watkins, couldn't be her this time.

You can ask me to purchase an appetizer and I will do so for $10, which means prosciutto, olives, figs and really awesome cheese.

Share a bottle with a friend and pay more.

OR spend $30 on food instead.

Please RSVP telling me what you are bringing.  You should expect to spend at least $30, but if you'd prefer, I can do the purchasing for you.  If you want me to buy your contribution to the wine and appetizers, please tell me by tomorrow at 3pm.

I look forward to seeing you.

Jeannine, Could you please purchase? I have been working in Denver this week and will be arriving home around 5. I won't have time to run to a store.

I'm happy to donate $20 for a better bottle. Gawain seems a bit overwhelmed, so if anyone wants to team up with me and pay me at the event, I'm game. And Gawain, feel free to jump in here too.

    April 9, 2013

    • Joyce S.

Hi Jeannine, I would be happy to give you $20 if you would purchase the wine, ok?

This is my first time with this group. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing the experience. Which wine would you like me to bring?

    April 9, 2013

    • Ralph

Would like you to bring Penfold's Grange, but any Shiraz or Grenache over $15 is fine. Ask your wine shop for help, if needed.

Every bottle is an adventure. Sometimes I want a grape from a region I've never experienced; other times I look for the familiar. But certainly two more extravagant choices would be old vine Garnachas from Spain (especially Prioriat) or Chateauneuf de pape! Explore and try something different.

Just finishing up a Garnacha/Syrah as I type this (no comments Kathleen). It took a while to open up. You may want to open your wine an hour or so before the tasting.

Yes. Open it but leave some in the bottle.
