Corvallis da Vinci Days / Kinetic Sculpture Race and Wine Tour 2.1

The Kinetic Sculpture Race is a central feature of da Vinci Days. Highly engineered and inventive human-powered “sculptures” come from far and wide to participate in this wacky two-day race. A 15-mile course, including two miles of the Willamette River, a mud bog, and a sand dune, test the human and aesthetic limits of these pioneers. Kinetic Racers, their supporters, and spectators seemingly don’t take life too seriously. It’s like "Halloween on steroids".

Before you say yea or nay to this event, please read on and then take time to explore the online “Visitors Guide” visitcorvallis.com.

Corvallis is in the heart of the Willamette Valley, 230 miles and 3 ½ hours from Tacoma. There are an abundance of things to see and do, don’t let time, imagination, and discretionary funds hold you back. There are twenty-three wineries, but also five breweries, three distilleries, a cidery (if that’s a word), and quite a selection of restaurants to satisfy nutrition wants.

Willamette Valley Vineyards (45 min from Corvallis, just off I-5), or other wineries in the valley, could be visited on the way to or from Corvallis. There is also Silver Falls State Park, the Spruce Goose, Oregon Coast; you name it --- numerous opportunities for additional activities.

The lower OSU campus area is the festival center with food courts, beer / wine gardens, main stage entertainment, up close viewing of the kinetic sculpture vehicles, electric vehicle race, and other special programming. Viewing for the river race
is from Riverfront Park, which can be six to eleven blocks from the three downtown motels. Suggest visiting Tyee Wine Cellars or 2 Towns Ciderhouse (or others) before or after the Corvallis lodging stop. The historical temperature range for these
dates is 83°F – 52°F.

It was a lot of fun, but I may have been a bad influence on Darlene -- she came back with quilting supplies!

Just so you know, there is more to da Vinci Days than a colorful and imaginative human powered contraption race, a Farmers Market, and the Canine Frisbee contest. There is also outdoor music & entertainment, exhibits devoted to sustainability; ecology; biology; chemistry, hands-on activities, food courts, beer & wine gardens, local arts & crafts, and more. A free shuttle service is provided to access festival sites on and off the OSU campus. Bring the sunscreen and park the auto; once you get there it could be a “car-less” weekend

The 2.1 up-dates yesterday did not did not come through as shown when it was saved. I noticed it today, and up-dated the site AGAIN. This time some of the text “saved” at a different size (looks bad). Either I need more skills or a “computer flogger”.

Fifty-seven days till da Vinci Days in Corvallis. The thought of parking the vehicle at the lodging on arrival and then walking from place to place (like a European town) is appealing, and seems more efficient. Besides, the walking may provide some justification for any excessive eating and drinking. The Corvallis Towne House Motor Inn is an older property, but I am told by friends that have stayed there often it is nice, and its central location would be well suited. It is two blocks from the Meetup location (Block 15 Restaurant & Brewery, check out their YouTube video), and three blocks from a suggested breakfast location (New Morning Bakery). The other two downtown lodgings are five blocks from the Meetup location. If you are considering attending, reserving a room now is suggested (ask about their cancelation policy).

Sixty-seven days till da Vinci Days in Corvallis. I’ve been collecting and reviewing information about the Festival and surrounding area. Corvallis is a foot and bike friendly university town with an abundance of things to see and do. All of the Festival activities (except the road race, dune climb, and mud bog) are within a 10 minute walk of the three downtown motor inns. I have made a reservation at the Corvallis Towne House Motor Inn (two blocks from the Meetup location). The other two are the Rodeway Inn and the Super 8 on the River. There are many other lodgings to choose from.
