The Kinetic Sculpture Race is a central feature of da Vinci Days. Highly engineered and inventive human-powered “sculptures” come from far and wide to participate in this wacky two-day race. A 15-mile course, including two miles of the Willamette River, a mud bog, and a sand dune, test the human and aesthetic limits of these pioneers. Kinetic Racers, their supporters, and spectators seemingly don’t take life too seriously. It’s like "Halloween on steroids".
Before you say yea or nay to this event, please read on and then take time to explore the online “Visitors Guide” visitcorvallis.com.
Corvallis is in the heart of the Willamette Valley, 230 miles and 3 ½ hours from Tacoma. There are an abundance of things to see and do, don’t let time, imagination, and discretionary funds hold you back. There are twenty-three wineries, but also five breweries, three distilleries, a cidery (if that’s a word), and quite a selection of restaurants to satisfy nutrition wants.
Willamette Valley Vineyards (45 min from Corvallis, just off I-5), or other wineries in the valley, could be visited on the way to or from Corvallis. There is also Silver Falls State Park, the Spruce Goose, Oregon Coast; you name it --- numerous opportunities for additional activities.
The lower OSU campus area is the festival center with food courts, beer / wine gardens, main stage entertainment, up close viewing of the kinetic sculpture vehicles, electric vehicle race, and other special programming. Viewing for the river race
is from Riverfront Park, which can be six to eleven blocks from the three downtown motels. Suggest visiting Tyee Wine Cellars or 2 Towns Ciderhouse (or others) before or after the Corvallis lodging stop. The historical temperature range for these
dates is 83°F – 52°F.
