52d Annual Greek Festival, Opa!

Opa! This is the weekend everyone is Greek, Opa! Baklava, Mousaka, Gyros, Spanykopata, Ouzo, Greek Beer and Wine Opa! I will be there by 4 to start my Greek grocery shopping for the year; if you wish to join me, I will be happy to be your tour guide and point out those hard to find items. This event fills up quickly, so those who are not interested in shopping, can secure tables for us. The festival will be held in a beer tent adjacent to the church; however a portion of the festival will be in the church, downstairs in the community room. If you wish to have a full course meal, you can do that in the community room.  If you have never been to the Greek church there are two ways to get to the festival. Go through the front door of the church (which will then count as attending church for the year), before you reach the chapel take either steps to the left or right and then follow the crowds. Those concerned lightening bolts might strike them if they approach the front door; to the left is a set of stairs that leads to the beer tent.

Since we have a Greek Wine Tasting Meetup before this event, it will give members an opportunity to discover Greek wines prior to this festival.

This is always a fun time. I especially liked the table we had this year: so much easier to get to it! Great turn out. I got enough "real" feta cheese and Kalamata olives to grace my salads for some time to come!

Oktoberfest in Leavenworth runs for 4 weekends the TW, D & HH are going on the 19th.

Food for thought (pardon the pun) Kalamata Olive Oil is arguably the best olive oil in the world. Deep, deep green. They sell it at the festival for $35 a liter; those who don't anticipate using that much might consider going in with others to split the cost and the olive oil. Just a thought :)

And as a history/geography lesson: Kalamata Olive Oil comes from of all places The Kalamata region of the Peloponnes peninsula. That peninsula is also famous for: Sparta; Mount Olympus - home of Zeus and his gods; and the original site of the ancient Olympic games.

    3 · September 25, 2013

    • Carolyn

Steve, do you mean $35 for 4 liters or a gallon maybe? I thought it came in that big can?

      1 · September 26, 2013

    • Steve D.

Hey Carolyn, you are correct. The cans are 3 liters, at the cost of $35 each can. For me, I buy four cans, and that lasts me a year...but then, I use a lot of olive oil when I cook.
