There has been bulletin board postings and email of Ellen and I doing questionable things with respect to group names.
Now that things have calmed down I thought we would comment. First I find it sad that as with the Salem witch trials a single person commenting can be viewed as judge, jury and prosecutor, before others are even asked to comment.
Think about it, in order for the allegations to be true that we stole another groups name: the MN Secretary of state, the registrar of Internet names and Ellen and myself would have had to been in collusion together against the questioning individual over a name. Perhaps a more believable scenario was the individual was too cheap or failed to do their job as a business owner and is simply looking for someone to blame, but that is just a thought we are blaming no one. Yes, once you start charging for meet-up groups you become a business owner with a whole host of obligations including taxes and accountability.
Please do not believe us as your sole source of information. Remember history when people were unjustly charged in the past. Think of the situation and what sounds correct and ask questions.
Anyone that knows us and our Meet-up groups know almost the exact same thing happened to us last year. The problem was resolved in less than a minute and we are still friends and do business with the other party in question.
For us, our next step is in the legal system for a free and open public forum. We are going to ask the court simply: "Where do we go to get our good name back? And what should be the damages?" We are also working with Meet-up abuse and complaint legal office.
We welcome anyone into our three free groups and to be an organizer as long as you fit into what the group is about and behave nice.
Best of luck to you and may god bless! Please forward this email to anyone you think should know.
