Interpretations of Candles and Candle Magick

A former member
Post #: 804
This system of candle interpretation is used by some Voodoo, Hoodoo and Santeria practitioners to monitor effectiveness of candles used in magickal workings.
There is no reason however that these interpretations could not be valid or effective within other religious paradigms and belief systems.
I have always had a great interest in candle magick and believe it to be a very simple, yet very effective and potent form of magick and spellworking.
I know there are a lot here that are interested in candle magick (shot out to Bre!) and thought this would be worth adding to their knowledge base and to increase their divinatory definitions.

These generally refer to the burning of "7 day candles" that can either be in glass or sometimes free-standing.

The candle explodes
There are two different ways to interpret this. If it is a protection or reversing candle it means that the candle protected something from astrally attacking you and/or a lot of negative energy has been directed towards
you.

Candle does not burn
If the candle is a prosperity or protection candle, this means that other type of spiritual cleansing must be done before the beginning of this spell to remove the negativity of the environment before proceeding.
If the candle is being used for binding then another type of spell must be used.

The candle has a high flame
The spell is going to be effective and work fast. If for prosperity or protection, the environment is clear of negativity. If for a binding, defensive or protective use, you will most likely see quick results as they do not have spiritual protection .

The candle has a low flame
In regards to prosperity & luck, cleanse your environment. In regards to binding and defensive spells, they are resisting due to a strong spirit and it will be awhile before you see results. It is suggested that you try
another spell in combination with the present one to see faster results.

The candle burns the glass totally black

If after the candle burns down the entire glass is black, it is thought to mean that negativity or witchcraft has been directed towards you. Cleansing your environment and lighting a reversing candle should do the
trick. If this happens when burning a candle to bind someone who you feel is harming you it suggests stopping because it may possibly turned back on you.

The candle burns the top half of the glass black
If only the top part of the glass burns black this means that the spell was initially met with negativity before it began to work.

The candle burns the bottom half of the glass back
If it is a candle for prosperity or luck, negativity was sent your way and the candle detected it. If used to bind or for defensive purposes, the spirit of the person was alerted and reversed the spell.

The candle burns only on one side
This means that the spell will only be part way effective. This means that the wrong candle or candle dressing was used.

The glass cracks
If being used for self-protection,this means that the candle broke the negativity in the environment. This can also mean witchcraft or the presence of secret enemies. If being used to bind, it means the protection of the individual was broken.

The candle flame crackles
If for self-protection it means that someone is talking about you and has bad intentions directed towards you. If being used to bind, it means the individual is thinking about you.

If the candle has more than one flame
The center or main flame represents you. If being used for protection each one other than the center one represents an enemy. If being used to bind or for self-defense, it means that the person is being helped by other people.

The candle flickers
When a candle flame flickers, this signifies the presence of spirits. Note: Be sure there are not errant and mundane explanations such as a ceiling fan, before assuming this.

The entire top of the candle including the wick is on fire
This means that the spell is being fought off by guardian spirits but more than likely, the spell will be successful.

The candle flame goes out during the spell
If the spell is for protection this means that while the job was being performed, witchcraft was directed your way and your spirits or wards were unable to fight it off. If directed towards another their spirits were able to fight the binding off & have alarmed the individual. Another type of spell or combination of spells must be performed.

Can a candle be extinguished and then lit again later?
Only a candle being used to bring prosperity or success to an individual may be extinguished before it has completely burned. If being used to bind someone, the candle flame must never be put out or the spell will not work generally speaking. The guardian spirits of the other individual will then have time to prepare and reverse it back on to you.

How do you put a candle flame out?
Placing a plate over the flame thus allowing the flame to extinguish itself naturally or use a candle snuffer.

What if a candle is extinguished and then relights itself?
This means that your guardian spirits do not want you to turn the candle off because they are detecting something good or bad for you. If the candle is extinguished they cannot assist you effectively.

What if a 7 day candle burns out before seven days?
This means that the spell is working fast and another candle must be lit immediately. Money is coming in regards to prosperity spells, a lot of negativity in regards to reversing spells and in spells of harm, that the individuals spirit is fighting it off but it will soon be successful.

What will make a candle spell work more effectively?
Using the appropriate incense, oils, herbal bath, salts, powders etc.

Candle Dressing

After figuring your intent for a candle magick working, you can apply herbs to strengthen the work.
This may consist of one, or multiple oils, powders, minerals and / or dried herbs.

If you are going to use multiple oils on one candle, wash your hands in between applications. Then layer the second oil over the first one you applied to the candle.

Applying Oils to Candles - Candle "Dressing"

By now you should have a clear intent for your candle spell or working.
If you are drawing or removing something, it is suggested to apply oils using the up or down technique..
There are many thoughts on this and other techniques such as the middle and out and Witches' Triangle techniques.

If you are working on a person or situation (compelling, court case, money release) you will want to employ the twisting method for applying any oils to the candle.

The Up OR Down Technique

The up technique is used to draw something to you. Taking the oil or perfume on your index finger, you move from the base of the candle to the wick, rotating the candle until it is completely covered in oil.

Logically then, dress the candle downward when they want to remove something.

The Middle and Out Technique

Some witches believe you should begin dressing a candle in the middle, working upward at first, until the entire top half of the candle is anointed and then go from the middle again downward to the base of the light. In this way your spell is sent from the “heart” of the candle into the universe or etherium.

Witches’ Triangle Method

You begin by dressing the “front” of the candle at the base - moving from left to right. Then move up the candle to the top on the right side-visualizing one side of a triangle. This should be done in one stroke. Go back down to the bottom and “pick up” your line at the base on the left side and move upwards again-completing the triangle. Now turn the candle over and repeat on the “back” side.

Twisting Method

Apply a fair amount of oil to the palms of your hands and then rub your hands together visualizing the target of the candle. Pick up the candle and begin twisting the oil into it - using a motion like that used to wring water out of a towel. Move from the middle outward until the entire candle is covered in oil. You may need to add more oil to your hands to get good solid coverage. During this process, concentrate on your intent.

Applying Herbs

After you have oiled your candle, you might apply herbs to it. It is good to do so at this point if you decide to. Simply pour your herbs into a plate and then roll the candle in them.

Applying Powders

Powders are the last material that should be added to the candle. An old traditional method for distributing powders is to blow them on to the candle. There are a couple of very good reasons to blow the powder onto the candle.

First, blowing provides a very even coverage and limits wasting expensive material. Secondly, breath has strong spiritual symbolism to it. Blowing on the candle makes it come alive. This is a particularly effective method for candles representing people.

When blowing powder, hold the candle by the end in one hand. Put a pinch of the powder in a spoon. Slowly rotate the candle while blowing the powder onto it until evenly covered.

Once your candle has been dressed in herbal materials, it is time to divide the candle up into sections so that it can be burned over the required number of days.

How to Measure a Candle - Using pins and needles with candle spells and magick

"Measuring a candle" is the the traditional term for dividing a candle into a predetermined number of sections by inserting needles or pins into the wax. Dividing the candle up into sections is easy. You might measure the length of the candle with a ruler and divide it up by the number of sections you need. The sections don't have to be exactly even. If they look evenly spaced to the eye when you have finished, it's a fine enough job.

One needle or pin should be inserted right at the point where the wick sprouts out of the wax. If you are doing drawing work, this is the last needle inserted because you insert them from the bottom to the top of the candle.
If you are removing, the wick needle is the first one placed. It's an easy process.

In some traditions it takes an even number of pins to make an odd number of sections. However, it is efficacious to work with an odd number. This is why the needle is inserted at the wick.

It is handy and suggestible to use sewing pins have plastic balls on the tip, so they are easier to push into the wax.

For relationship work you could use the red capped pins from a package of multicolored ones. You might use all green for money work or all yellow for success, etc.

Ideally, use sewing needles for works designed to remove bad luck, or the effects of negative witchcraft.
They are also used in protection work.

Some traditions suggest breaking the eye on the needle when they are working on a binding spell. The belief being the witch and their actions are spiritually obscured from the enemy. A broken eye makes it more difficult for the target to find out who is causing the binding.

When burning a measured candle, allow the first needle at the wick to fall out, and then let the candle burn to a point right above the second needle. It is important that you meditate for the entire time the candle is lit. Each day, burn through one needle - allowing the needle to fall and up to the next needle. Remember, do not blow out a candle you are doing spell work with. You can pinch the candle out or use a proper candle snuffer.

The needles or pins should be reserved for use at the end of the candle burning ritual - so keep them in a safe place. You can cover them with herbs or powders and leave them on your altar until you are ready to work with them. This also adds energy to them.

Within voodoo, especially New Orleans style voodoo and hoodoo, the needles should be inserted into the name paper or petition that will be sitting underneath the candle as it is burned after they fall from the candle as it burns.

For a "seven needle" work make two "X's" on each side and a "double cross" in the center of the paper. The double cross consists of one vertical needle and two horizontal needles. Since this pattern is used for drawing work, you will want to place it with your other ritual remains, wax, etc. Some drawing spells instruct you to keep the ritual remains. Some may call for remains to be buried at the front door of your home or even in the backyard.

If your spell does not offer instructions on how to dispose of the needles and or name paper or you are unsure - do what feels right to you.

To finish a nine needle candle work, use three needles to form three double crosses on your name paper or petition. This paper is disposed of with the rest of the ritual remains.

I have a question - when there is two large connected knots ( not sperated ) with a high steady flame for a reversable love candle what does that mean?

Are you speaking of knots in the wick of the candle or of a string that has been knotted? I'd say that it means that the intention is being addressed fully. There are many ways to do a hand parting or a separation between 2 consenting persons. Consenting being the key. Never do anything to affect someone else even in that manner without their permission.

In the information that Jon has presented there is a lot of references to bindings. That is something that in my opinion should be done only in the most extreme cases.

Oops I just realized I am on Cliff's name
