I am all about giving during the holiday season and I am looking for a few elves that would like to join me. We will be working with Abode Services (The same organization that we are helping for Thanksgiving) Here is some information about what we are going to do this year.
Now, as for Project Independence: Project Independence is a supportive housing program with an intensive case management component serving emancipated foster youth ages 18 - 24. The participants are youth who have been wards of the state and at 18 "turned out" from foster homes because their foster family is no longer receiving money to care for them. Often they end up on the streets, homeless or worse. Project Independence provides subsidized housing for the youth and the case managers work with them for up to 2 years (maximum time in the program) on finding jobs, increasing education, money management, life skills and parenting just to name a few - the obvious goal is to provide them with a support network not provided for them by functional biological family systems and working on helping them attain housing permanancy after they complete the Program. These youth are often survivors of abuse, neglect and general indifference by not only their biological families, but foster families and group homes - definitely in need of caring adult role models to help them transition from teenagers to young responsible adults... Currently they serve about 35 Youth (18-25) some of whom also have children of their own ranging in age from a few months old to 5 years - at this time there are many children of participants in Project Independence.
Our main goal is to provide Christmas presents for as many as 13 children of Project Independence but would like to get a few gifts for the children at the Union City Bridgeway. I will get a list of the kids names, ages, and what they want from Santa are and post them....Once I post you can choose what you would like to buy for that child. You will then bring your wrapped gifts to Togos where we will have a bite to eat and chat away....If you can't make dinner but would still like to buy a gift I will work on picking that gift up from you or you can bring it to another meetup prior to us delivering them to the children. I know times are tough for many of us and I totally understand if you can't participate....I am hoping a few elves will join me in giving back this holiday season. Merry Christmas MaMa Elf
