Welcome to OWWL, a Metro Detroit Writing Group.
This group is primarily for literary fiction writers. Genre writers please see below.
Members include established professionals and talented amateurs. We meet in person every two weeks to review submissions and discuss publishing news and opportunities.
Writers submit completed drafts, following general formatting guidelines. Submissions may be up to 7500 words. Feedback is timely, thoughtful, and honest--sometimes brutally honest. If you are brand new to writing, or have never participated in a writers' group, be advised that OWWL is not a teaching organization. Each current member of the group is committed to a continual study and practice of fiction, and we ask that applicants be at least somewhat versed in writing theory.
If you are dedicated to your craft, can give and receive constructive critiques, and are in search of a community, this group may be for you. Contact the organizers if you're interested in attending a meeting. You may attend a meeting as a guest, to see what we're about. To continue to attend, however, you will be asked to submit a writing sample for jury evaluation.
GENRE WRITERS: All is not lost! If you write genre fiction like science fiction, horror, romance, slipstream, steampunk, etc., you may be more interested in our affiliated group, the Midwest Genre Writers, which meets on alternate Thursdays. If you'd like to find out more about that group, contact the organizers (we're both in that group too) and we'll give you details.
