Intro to Steam Bending
Thursdays, 7-10pm: 6/7 through 6/21
Tired of squares and straight edges? Learn the art and science of steam bending solid wood! Instructor Rex Kalehoff (www.rexkalehoff.com) will guide you through the entire process and share tips and tricks for steam bending success.
This three session course will introduce you to the methods and processes of bending solid wood using steam. It is an easy, fun and really cool way to create curved parts in your projects!
We will cover how to build different types of steam boxes, using simple and affordable materials, and we will also look at several ways to make forms and molds for bending the curve of your choice. First, participants will work as a group, experimenting with different curves and forms provided, in order to explore the limits of the materials and processes. Following a discussion on how to incorporate bent parts into an original design, participants can choose to continue to work experimentally or build their own forms for an individual project. Projects may be functional, decorative, or sculptural, and the instructor will encourage unique designs, experimentation, and creative thinking!
Included with this class is a free pass for 12 hours of studio / workshop time (a $140 value) for independent project work between class sessions.
Fee: $425 plus $50 materials fee
