The Newbies Guide to Customizing WordPressThemes

You have spoken, we have listened! This month Judi Knight of New Tricks is going to take you by the hand and teach you how themes are set up, and how to make them your own. We will explore some very basic CSS and how to use Firebug (a Firefox add on) to find the areas that need tweaking. We will also go into the easy ways to modify theme images and backgrounds.

We are planning a series of workshops for the fall that will be held on Saturday mornings which will go into more detail on theme customization and theme development. More to come on that. In the meantime.... Come to this month's meet up and get started.

Check out Judi's website for posts on Filezilla, Firebug, Programmer's Notepad and others that are background for this presentation

Looking forward to this Meetup. As KJ Ye asks, are we able to pay on-site, or do we need to prepay?

Can someone give me the name of the book about WordPress that was mentioned in our meetup? I thought it was Beginner's Guide to WordPress but I can't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Dail, the guide is found in the magazine section, usually by the iPhone mags, for around $29. Lisa Sabin-Wilson, who was at WordCamp Savannah 2010, has released a new version of her "WordPress for Dummies" book, which covers 3.0, and she is moving to Atlanta, possibly to Marietta, so maybe she'll be coming to one of the Meetups.

Thank you Damon and Frank! No wonder I couldn't find it! Damon, I saw the Smashing WordPress but wasn't sure if it was too advanced but will take another look at it. Frank, I most definitely will look at the new WordPress for Dummies, I hope she does come to one of our Meetups. Thank you both again!

Judi did a great job leading the group through the basics. And Mike was able to show a new Wordpress Question and Answer site. Oh yeah, the pizza was pretty good too.

Although much of the material was over my head, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I did know or was at least familiar with. I look forward to more meetups and learning the ropes!

    Great as always!

I learned a lot from this meetup meeting. Thanks to all the presenters. Judy, you were so informative. Thank you

It was above my head. I was hoping for a more "start from scratch" kind of presentation, since the title said "newbies." Perhaps next time provide a more detailed description of the level of user targeted for the class/seminar. I do, however, look forward to going to a possible real beginner's seminar, or "getting started" class, in the future. I was also disappointed that no one was a greeter and introduced any new people around. I only got to briefly speak with two people all night: Jack Kennard and another gentleman, who as also brand new to WordPress. I felt like an outsider all evening; very uncomfortable, like I was crashing a party. Also, I could not see the screen clearly (everything on the screen was way too small), and sometimes had a hard time hearing.

Always left wanting for more information. Sorry I've got to wait till next month's meeting. Looking forward to it!

Excellent discussions and a great group of people, both newcomers and longtime members of the Atlanta WordPress Users Group.

It was a good way to be introduced to Wordpress. Judi went over a lot of stuff that i was already familiar with, but it was a good refresher! I'm very interested in coming to some more advanced sessions.
  • Su Berland
Very informative and easy to understand. Thanks, Judi!

Good group, well organized. Speakers are qualified to speak on these topics. One suggestion: when showing websites with small print, please remember that most of the audience will not be able to read the words - the presenter could read out the important parts...or enlarge the print when possible.
  • Claudia Arkush
It was alot for me to digest since I am not facile in Wordpress but as a (print) designer I need to know the scope of Wordpress possibilities and this gave me a insight and confidence to jump in. Your consensus taking for the upcoming meetups was especially appreciated.
