Pasadena WordPress Meetup

Hey y'all,

We're meeting up again for some WordPress goodness! Let's get started on our agenda for the next meet up. I'm taking suggestions on topics to discuss on the 20th.

Right now, Sharon Kyle has offered to provide some insight into strategies she uses on http://www.laprogressive.com/ to drive traffic. Should be a good topic for users of all levels. If anyone else wishes to present on a topic, let me know.

What else do you want to know about? Leave your comments here everyone.

Thanks

Alex

Another nice turn out! We were able to present on a couple of topics and then broke out into a networking and discussion session to close things out. All in all, awesome group!

One last item from this last meetup, I mentioned a product called ServerPress, which allows you to easily run WordPress sites locally on your desktop/laptop. There's not a discount code for it at this time, I'm afraid, but still very much worth the price given what it provides ? http://serverpress.com/products/desktopserver/ - Don't forget to say "hello to me on the Facebook". =) Cheers!

As always, lots of valuable information and interesting people. Lots of new ideas for driving website traffic. Thanks again, Alex, for organizing. And thanks to Irina Netchaev for use of the John Aaroe Real Estate conference room.

Very Informative and friendly, as always. I learned a lot, and it was good to meet the new people as well as say Hello to those of you I had met before.

Great meeting tonight everyone! Just wanted to share a couple things.
First off, the Facebook group. Here's the URL: http://www.facebook.com/groups/182995691747744/ ? It's a private group so you have to ask to join or have someone add you. Here's my FB profile just in case: http://www.facebook.com/groups/182995691747744/ - feel free to add me.

A great resource to create your own WordPress themes (it's the guide I used to learn): http://themeshaper.com/2009/06/22/wordpress-themes-templates-tutor

Also, for those of you so inclined, a very special beer is on tap down the street at Haven: Pliny the Younger.

Alex is correct, meters will not be enforced tonight, and since he doesn't want you to quote him, you can quote the City of Pasadena's webpage - http://cityofpasadena.net/Transportation/On_Street_and_Metered_Parking/

It is a holiday , so parking is free. They will not be ticketing.

Terry: Street parking is limited to 2 hour and it is 4 or 5 quarters for each hour. They are very efficient about ticketing - no grace period. You can park in the parking structure on DeLacey between Colorado and Green. I think it is $5, but no chance of the meter running out and getting a $45+ ticket. You can also park a few blocks away (south of Green) and find 4 hour meters which are a little cheaper, but you will have to walk a bit.

    Terry,
I know that there's a parking garage on Delacey between Colorado and Green. I believe that the meters are not running tonight due to the holiday; don't quote me on that, though. =) See you tonight.

    Any helpful hints on parking?

Dick and I will be there. We intend to talk about how we drive traffic to our site.

Looking forward to meeting up with everyone tonight, should be a good one!

The agenda is loose, as always, and given the range of expertise in the room, questions are most welcome. So bring your laptop, curiosity and, if you like, a snack or something to drink. See you all there!

    Hey Lucy, I second Intelligentsia.

    February 20, 2012

Lucy - one of my favorite/unique hole in the wall coffee shops in Pasadena is Zona Rosa Caffe - 15 S. El Molino Ave. - though downsides are it's cash only and they don't have wifi, but if you can pick up a signal up from elsewhere, it's worth checking out.

Hi Lucy, our office is right in the middle of Old Pasadena. There are plenty of coffee shops around - Starbucks and Intelligentsia are right around the corner on Colorado Blvd. :)

To avoid traffic I plan on heading to Pasadena from the Westside in the afternoon - any recommendations for local coffeeshops to work at until the meetup?

I've recently just re-located back to L.A. area. I am just starting my WP web design/dev business and I am interested in knowing all I can about how to begin operating a web design business--finding work, working with clients, networking, learning more about design and dev, etc. Should be fun to meet and share with you!

Can't wait to hear what Sharon has to share. I think driving traffic and SEO discussions are always powerful.

I have a site using WP for a book I'm writing and want to pitch to an online mag. My little bit of knowledge needs expanding. For instance, on one of my pages, the theme changed while I was using lynda.com and I want know how to get it back to the original theme. Also, use of extensions on the pages, the parent/child relationship.

    Hey everyone,
Hope you all had a great weekend. So our next meetup is on the 20th (next Monday) and so far the topics that have been suggested have been: What goes into Child Theme development and more importantly what a child theme actually is.

The next is a brief presentation by Sharon Kyle regarding content strategy and WordPress. The forum is open to discussion. Let's here your thoughts.

As I mentioned on FB, I'd like to know how to create a child theme.
