Out of (version) Control

Automattic Lounge (map)

Selected By: Ross Chapman

We had a couple requests for a meetup on versioning in WordPress. Topics covered may span code-level file system versioning with git & svn to database page/post management and revision states within the admin.

If people are interested, we'll also explore the versioning system for Posts and Pages within WordPress.

I'm creating a local art gallery website. It would basically showcase up to 25 artists and their work. I wonder if anyone has any ideas of how I can link the artists with their work. I have been trying out some custom field plugins, but I'm not sure adding the 9 images, each having their own custom field is the best route to go. I would love any other ideas you may have.

I'm really liking git... Finally set up functioning dev, test & prod environments. Not yet clear on how much I should worry about keeping wp db in sync across environments (probably depends on plugin and theme use of the db). Currently manually syncing db's using phpmyadmin - there's got to be a better way to do this sync though!

How long do your tuesday meetings (as in tomorrow) go till? I work 9-6 in the rat race still and rely on public transportation for intra-city traveling. At either rate, I'm very interested in meeting up with some fellow wordpress users. You can see my sites through my main page: http://serafmedia.com - my "main, Main" site is: http://freeindependentsun.com - I'm not too savvy in wordpress (or html, or php), just understand basic art/web design and enough code and process to get it working.

@Jack, normally our meetups are done/wrapping up by around 8/8:30. Tonight's event is going to be focussed a little more towards developer types, since we're looking at version control and development workflow. Hope that helps, Beau.

This was an interesting meetup and I think it was a good jumping off point for me. My only problem was that it seemed to jump from the very basic and general ("This is what version control is.") to super specific ("Here's a bunch of rapid fire stuff on the command line.") without any middle ground. Can anyone recommend a decent ground-up resource for getting set up? Tutorials, etc?
