WordPress, Images & You: Tips & Tricks for the Intermediate WordPress Photophile

  • February 27, 2014 · 6:00 PM

Intermediate level tips, tricks, plugins and code snippets to help you and your clients utilize and manage WordPress website images more efficiently.

This Meetup is inspired by experiences with client questions, concerns, quandaries and confusions.

If you have any specific situations you would like to see addressed, ask in the comments below. Also, if you hear the same questions over and over from your own clients, let me know and I will address them for the group.

Meetup Primer

These are some topics I may mention during this Meetup, but I will not spend time covering, as they are very novice or they are a topic in their own.

• Installing/setting up WordPress. Check out Jim Grant's presentation from January - http://www.meetup.com/wordpresskc/events/160577442/

• The creation and use of child themes. The WordPress Codex is the best resource - https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

• How to FTP into a WordPress website - http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-use-ftp-to-upload-files-to-wordpress-for-beginners/

• How to make changes to theme files files, specifically the functions.php - https://codex.wordpress.org/Functions_File_Explained

• Source code editor/text editor. I use Notepad++. I also use the FTP built into Notepad++ - http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

Thank you Travis, I must admit I was skeptical that my clients could get by with the wp media editor alone, but have now opened my eyes to this tool and the plugins you suggested. BTW - resizing with the aspect ratio will work in the editor if you hold down the shift key when resizing.

    1) Suggestions on how to get geotag information onto an image
    2) How can I verify that I got the geotag information on the image and that the information is readable by the search engines

    If I might suggest:

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/edik-enhanced-image-editor/

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-media-replace/

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/post-thumbnail-editor/

And NextGen is getting much better, it's almost prime-time enough for us to start using it over the WP Media manager.

I work/live in Topeka, so making it by 6pm is difficult. If it were closer to 6:30/7:00pm I'd drive down.

      I'll be there. :)

The weather situation has become interesting the later half of this week. We are going to attempt the Google Hangout thing and see if it works satisfactory with our neighborhood's limited bandwidth after the public babysitting service lets out and the kidos go home. Please keep me posted how and where to log in so we can try this out.

Does anyone have a specific situation they would like to see addressed?

When I run a GTMetrix test on on my site, I get dinged for "The following image(s) are missing width and/or height attributes." -- most of those images are from outside sources: badges from affiliates, etc. AND I get this recommendation "Optimizing the following images could reduce their size by 27.9KiB (22% reduction)." -- I would like to know how to tweak my image settings in WP to speed up my page load times. Ideally, it would be a solution that would batch process my images from the four years I've had the site up and running -- otherwise, that's a heck of a lot of images to manually process.

Two situations, actually. First, I work for news organizations that have hundreds of thousands of images. The inability to categorize them in the media uploader makes life difficult on any kind of library management. The ability to use custom categories/taxonomies to organize media would be helpful. Second, I have several news outlets sharing a single multisite install. We license images from several providers across our corporation, but we're forced to upload those images to each individual site. There is no mechanism for sharing a common image library. I've already done a ton of research, so I know what's out there now. In my case, I'm more interested in how to get these issues on the radar of the WP developers and lobby for solutions.

My situation that frustrates me is the organization of media.
The majority of my clients are directors in direct sales. We do lots of photo recognition for their team members but the back in part is a pain. Same photo in lots of different pages/posts to recognize different things. And usually they update their photo periodically so I need to replace their existing photo, not just delete and break the link.

All of the data comes off Excel reports and while I hate putting them in tables, it’s to most efficient way that I have found yet. I'm open to better way and think it might be in custom post types but I haven't messed with those much.

Back on topic, I would like to be able to toggle the 'All media items' to also the categories like 'consultant photos', 'director photos', 'event flier' PDF and docs. Oh and all this needs to work in the Multisite install.

BTW if you want to see this in action, check out http://nsdgloria.com/area.

Another thing comes to mind! Say you've built a site in which users are invited to upload artwork. How do we force the size of images users choose to upload to comply with my template? (For instance, everything gets automatically shrunk to a max of 600 px, despite an original upload size of 2000 px.)

    Thanks, Image Ninja. :)

Hi there. I'd love to know best practices for managing websites with tons of media. The out-of-the-box WP media interface leaves much to be desired, and for those dealing with hundreds of images on a single site, what are some good ways to file, store, and order? Thanks!

Any chance for a remote connection for this class?

Typically there's a live feed on Google Hangout (the link gets posted here after the meeting starts), which is then posted on YouTube - so even if you miss it at first, you can see it later.

Yes! And I will not include the intros this time - unnecessarily long that way.
