Lessons Learned Migrating GameMarx.com to WordPress

NOTE: We'll be at a new venue again this month, hopefully the last change for a while. The last venue, with door locking issues and no street-level access, posed some problems, and our old friends who run the Technology Cooperative are moving once more. The meeting will be at 13 Emory Place, just a few blocks away from our last meeting place. There should be plenty of free parking right by the building and a front door you can come right in vs. having to wait for somebody to spot you and usher you in, as has happened at the last couple of meetings.

As the move is in progress, internet connectivity may be spotty or nonexistent, so bring a pad and pen as a backup if you wish to take notes. :)

Mike has kindly agreed to give this month's talk, whose summary he's given as follows:

This talk will go over the process of moving an existing .Net, Azure-based website to WordPress and how the various problems of the move were solved.  Topics will include selecting a theme, plugins used and custom plugins developed, integration with services such as YouTube, FaceBook, Twitter, Disqus, and The Old Reader, and deprecating FeedBurner.  Most importantly well look at how each of these decisions were made to support the goals of the site.

wish I could be there, but I woke up this morning with a sore throat and headache. PLUS with Comcast being down all day yesterday, I got behind on what I need to get done for my clients. I'll be looking for the post afterwards. See you all next month!

Hi Daryl. will there time for questions? How long is the meeting?

Lori, we routinely allow some time for Q&A, so unless Mike holds forth for an extra long time, there should be an opportunity. There's no set meeting length. I feel like we usually go for more than an hour but less than 1.5 hours, and sometimes a few will go out for beer (or whatever) afterward. How the new venue will affect post-meeting beer prospects I'm not sure yet. :)

From this location take a left on central and go about 5-6 blocks, there's a place called Central Flats and Taps. Good selection and good food too. (probably a drive)

Oh man - one of my kids woke up with a sniffly/runny nose. Might not be able to make it... but will try :)

Just another quick reminder that the venue is different from where we've met in the past. Please map the address and don't miss the meetup by showing up at the old address. :)
