Zoom in with "AutoFocus"

Selected By: Steve Bruner

I'm pleased to announce our first WordPressNYC Meetup of 2010!

This year we have a new venue thanks to Sun Microsystems, and a new format, thanks to the feedback our members gave in the forum, and some things I learned at WordCampNYC.

  • Main Event: of course we're going to have a primary presentation, and this year we have more speakers interested in participating then ever before. I also expect more intermediate and advanced presentations as well.
  • Genius Bar: Each meetup will have an expert in WordPress running a genius bar to provide one-on-one help.
  • Breakout sessions: In the unconference style, after the main event, we'll break out into various rooms based on group interests. This is totally flexible and unplanned.
  • *New Start Time: Since we have more to cover, the meetups will now start at 6:30pm. Still on the third Tuesday of each month.

Main Event:
Zoom in with "AutoFocus”
Presenter: Allan Cole

Wordpress is constantly evolving and changing to make things better for users and developers. So it goes without saying that keeping your theme up to date with new versions of WordPress is always important. Sometimes this only requires a few function/template tag adjustments. In other cases it requires a complete overhaul to the core functionality of the theme. The latter happens to be the case with a theme that Allan is currently re-developing called AutoFocus.

Autofocus is a super cool theme with a unique look. Though it's primarily designed for photographers wanting to showcase their work. Learning the concepts behind Autofocus can improve your own website.

Allan originally released it in March 2009 and considering some of the improvements to WordPress 2.9, it is now time for an upgrade. In this session, Allan show you some of the thinking behind getting AutoFocus updated and how it utilizes some of the new features in WordPress 2.9.

What you need to know about WordPress 3.0
If you're a developer, you don't want to miss this.

The WordPress 3.0 release is set to be a large one, with the biggest news being the merge of WordPress MU (multi-user) into the main WordPress branch. This means every standard WordPress install will be able to go multiuser as well.

Shane Froebel, one of the WordPress core contributors, will go over what every plugin/theme developer will need to know to be ready for the merge.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Meetup!

I found the whole evening well organized and informative. As a 'newbie', I really appreciated the small group discussion at the end. Would have liked a one on one 'genius bar' opportunity, but understand that is not practical for a large group so will seek to email or find a forum to answer more specific questions.

    I posted a recap here: http://bugssite.org/blog/2010/01/20/wordpress-nyc-meetup-... :-)

The presentation of my slideshow will go up tomorrow on the same post after I clean it up a bit. Did we have video? I forgot to ask. :x

As a first time attendee, I was initially overwhelmed by the technical focus of the presentations. I sort of "got" Allan Cole's rundown of his improvements to AutoFocus but as a showcase for artwork do not find it relevant to my needs. Steve did save the evening for me when the newbies gathered for their breakout. I concur with Gretel that a small, hands-on type of tutorial for beginners should be considered.

I found both sessions of the meetup helpful. The design talk about AutoFocus and the intro to WP 3.0 were both very good. Thanks

Steve is not afraid to mix it up in order to keep all levels engaged. From the WP novice to the seasoned developer, he finds a right niche through rockstar presenters, break-out groups, genius bars & is always open to suggestions. The more risks he takes, the better it gets :D

was glad the group broke up into smaller groups. happy the beginner's group was allowed an hour to learn details and info about wordpress.

It was great to hear about the Wordpress 3.0 plans. It certainly answered some questions I had. Alan's presentation was very good as well.

It was my first meetup with this group. It was very informative, creative, inspiring and friendly. I like how the groups later divided so everyone of various experience had an opportunity to learn and explore in more detail.

Always enjoy Allan Cole. First saw him at WordCamp where I learned a lot about child themes from him. I design portfolio sites and this was an excellent presentation about a subject I am very interested in: photo gallery themes. Also very interested in the preview of WP 3.0 I still have a conflict on the third Thursdays MeetUp date. Maybe that will change.

It was a great kick off to the new year. I thought that the Auto Focus Theme presentation was done well and appealed to many in the audience. There was a great exchange of ideas about how the theme could be expanded and explanations on why certain design elements were done. Allan did a great job. The WP 3.0 presentation was very interesting to me. As someone who subscribe to and reads as much as I can about upcoming releases it was good to hear a presentation of the key changes coming. Shane was able to summarize the available information and give a perspective I could not have gotten without attending. The break out session were a very good thing. In the future we may want to look at utilizing the space so that presentations could run concurrently. While this could cause some people to miss presentations, it could allow for a longer and more complex presentation given to a focus audience as opposed to trying to make the presentations appeal to all.

    Wonderfull. :-D

Good mix of presentation/Q&A time and small-group time. I would have liked to have heard the theme designer's talk but I had a plug-in dilemma so I went to the 'genius' breakout with Shane from WordPress. Several developers were helpful to me and to each other. The Meetup attendees I talked with, mostly developers, were unanimous in praise for WPNYC Meetup. This was my first WPNYC Meetup. It was helpful and I will attend future sessions.

It was my first meetup and I really enjoyed the presentations, and the small groups afterwards. I went to pick up tips and I'm sure I got some great ones. Thanks!!

It was great. Very informative and the venue is a good location. This was my first Wordpress Meetup and I now plan on attending each month.

People should only be allowed to ask questions after each presentation. Having questions during presentations always sidetracks what the speaker is saying and disrupts the flow. The discussion inevitably becomes about something very specific that most others probably don't understand or care about.
