WordPress as a CMS: The Strategy of Content Publishing

This location is shown only to members

WordPress isn't just for blogs anymore. Following publishing strategies and utilizing plugins, you can turn WordPress into a flexible content management system (CMS). Consultant, designer, and developer Johnathan Andersen (www.johnathanandersendesign.com) will share his experience in the online content publishing industry and how you can use WordPress to build and manage your own online magazine and make money. We will take a look at several leading content publishing websites and how you can create similar features on your own online magazine using plugins and following particular publishing strategies.

Even standard blogging websites will benefit from the techniques and plugins discussed here.

This presentation will be for all levels of WordPress users who want to learn more about what WordPress can do for their personal businesses.

As always there will be time for networking after the presentation.

The cost of this session is $5.

** Please note that this Meetup is scheduled for January 20, 2009. We will be skipping the December Meetup due to the holidays.

My history blog is looking too blog-like (DutchNewYork.com). It needs to be a news portal, in look and layout. I'm sitting in the front row!

Had a great time! I agree with Ken, would be nice for an "after party" of sorts to keep the conversations going/network

Steve Bruner's intro to WordPress was super, and while Johnathan's main talk was a bit more technical than I could follow at times, I definitely learned a lot, and picked up some great links and ideas.

Johnathan showed layouts of several magazine-style sites and discussed the trade-offs of each. He then discussed how to achieve these layouts using WordPress features such as categories, tags, and query_posts. Johnathan's fast-paced style suits that of the media industry in which he obviously thrives. I look forward to experimenting with these ideas.

Good presentation. But I will definitely need the PDF notes to retrace and put to work many of the solutions that were shown. Hosting is not for everyone but Steve is an excellent host. This was my first Meetup. I have a conflict with it being on the third Tuesday of the month. I will probably have to pick and choose my return visits. Seems a great group for networking. Maybe there can be some time built into it at the end. Or more realistically, suggest at place to go for coffee afterwards.

Steve did a fantastic job organizing the event. Thanks again to Tom and GigPixel for use of their great space. Jonathan gave a great presentation that elicited many questions and comments from the audience. Jonathan had a good presence and was very comfortable presenting and taking questions. I believe that his presentation was just right for this audience. Not too easy but not too technical. Steve's intro talk on Wordpress basics was very good. i had planned to skip that but arrived early and found there was info in that presentation that I didn't know. The only thing I would have liked to have more of was networking; getting a chance to meet the otehr members and learn more about what they are doing.
