Hear great Malian music and raise funds for the Red Cross

Join us to hear two wonderful musicians from Mali, West Africa and raise funds to help the humanitarian crisis in the Sahel.

Music by two virtuoso string players, Mamadou Sidibe on the ngoni, and Karamogo Cissokho on the kora. There's a suggested donation of $10, with proceeds going to the Red Cross in Mali.

The Baobob Village in the Mission is an easy 3-block walk from the 16th Street BART. It's Bissap Baoabab's "lounge and dance space" next door to the main restaurant, with a full bar and food available. More info at:

Come join us for great music, conversation, food and drinks for a good cause! I'll be easy to spot in my long dark blue boubou (African robe) with white embroidery. :)

Really nice group, hope to hang out with you more & get to know you. It's always a challenge for me to hear & be heard at a music venue.

Dorie Stein had a good segment on the terrible situation for musicians in Mali last night (http://www.tangents.com/). Two good articles on his website too:
"Islamism is on the march and threatening
to wipe out the country's cultural heritage"
(by Rose Skelton, Independent UK, 8/18/12) "Music in Northern Mali is Silenced by Islamist Extremists"
(by April Peavey/Marco Werman, The World 8/23/12) See you tonight!

Hi all-- How wonderful to see such enthusiastic response. Looking forward to seeing (or meeting) all of you on Sunday evening. A quick note: the organizer tells me that, unfortunately, Karamogo Cissokho will not be performing. Instead, Tim Abdellah will be playing, a specialist in North African music and Moroccan gnawa. Check him out at http://www.timabdellah.com/.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
