Welcome to the Listen for Life and Batish Institute's World Music Meetup Group! It is a great place to share and find out about concerts, find people to go to shows with, and share your love of great live music from all the world's traditions.
Important: Please Read before announcing a meetup!
Anyone who wants to organize a world music meetup is welcome to do so but I've noticed that many times a member joins, quickly suggests a meetup to promote an event, then drops the membership. This is NOT a meetup and has disturbed many a member in this group. Suggest a meetup for the right reasons please. For promoting a show try putting a post on a discussion board or use the mailing list.
As Co-organizers, make all effort to rally your crowd to join your suggested meetups, be responsible for organizing the meetups by selecting where, when, how, we will meet. Finally, take lots of pictures of the group that attends. I love to see this. Links to short Youtube videos work great and show the ones that did not, or could not, attend what they missed :) Go ahead, make them jealous!
I love music from all over the world. There is richness all around us with cultural diversity that reflects a global wholeness. That's what makes this group so exciting to belong to! We are cut from the same cloth and yet wear different dresses reflecting what's unique to us. Here, we all join hands and thank the fact that in bringing our joint resources and interests to this group, we all enrich each other in all respects. I would love to hear what music excites you! Drop me a note and share your thoughts :)
My music institute in Santa Cruz California is the current sponsor of this Meetup group. I teach sitar, tabla, harmonium, dholak, singing etc. and have taught Indian and World Music appreciation and improvisation classes at San Jose State, Mills College, UCSC.
Although I travel and do concerts frequently, Bay Area is home to me. This group felt very special and hence I took on the task of supporting it, and, all who belong here. Please do drop me a note when you join. I would love to have regular meetups just to say Hi and socialize with you all. More on this as I figure it out :)
Finally, if you are directly involved in promoting a concerts by announcing a meetup here, offer the members here a special discount or perk! It will not only raise awareness for your event but also the turnout! My personal favorite is a reduced ticket price to your event. Email me to set this up.
