Bay Area World Music Venues

Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
One of Bay Areas treasures for wonderful exhibits but also a great performance venue for music from the Asian subcontinent.

Throckmorton Theatre Mill Valley. Great live music and comedy venue.

Yoshi's San Francisco
Live World and Jazz Music On 2 Stages.

Kuumbwa Jazz CenterSanta Cruz, California. A great hang. This center has slowly started adding world music to their calendar and is a great experience. No bad seat in the house.

Ashkenaz: a nonprofit music and culture venue in Berkeley that specializes in presenting live world and roots music. Tends strongly toward African and East European music, with a great dance floor and a cafe serving beer and wine.

Great American Music Hall, 859 O'Farrell St. San Francisco, CA 94109 415-885-0750. Wonderful venue. Occasional World Music performances. Would like to see them do much more!

La Pena: a community center on the Oakland-Berkeley border, focusing on Latin American music and culture, but with forays into African and other world music forms. La Peña has "a national reputation and a global vision that promotes peace, social justice and cultural understanding through the arts, education and social action."

Red Poppy Art House: one of the most unique venues in San Francisco. This little place, (approx. 650 sq. ft.) on the corner of Folsom Street and 23rd Street, is an artists? work studio during the week; and a colorful, candlelit concert hall on the weekends, hosting an array of top-caliber artists/performers from around the world.

Rhythmix Cultural Works: a non-profit community arts center in Alameda with a beautiful vaulted theater/dance/performance space in a renovated industrial building. Presents a wide range of world music, comedy, theater plus an offering of classes, workshops, art exhibits and more.

Sangati Center: a nonprofit community center in the Mission, focused on providing an intimate venue for unamplified performances of Indian classical music. No refreshments provided, it's like sitting in someone's living room.

Batish Institute of Indian Music and Fine Arts: Santa Cruz, California. School of music and a North Indian and workshop space for traditional and world music. It has hosted some of the finest world music artists over the past 44 years. Home of Sitar Power by Ashwin Batish
