Dang - I'm sorry to have had to miss this meetup. Sounds like it was a good one. This is a very good topic; please consider covering this again in the future.

I have to second what Shane said. I'm sure it's very dull for the pros, who already know nearly everything that was taught this time, and there was a bit of (apparently) off-topic chat. But for brand new WP beginners like myself, the information I got last night, particularly after we broke up and started getting one-on-one assistance, was desperately needed. Just a couple of minutes saved me many wasted hours or days, I'm certain. Thanks to Kathy, Mickey, Ashlea and the rest.

I am so grateful that you invited and welcomed the beginners to attend with a lot of the advanced members
I do not mind when the conversation becomes over my head and I would hope the same is for the advanced members. thank you for this opportunity to be amongst you all as I learn and grow with WordPress.
Thank you for holding space of patient with us I am so grateful for the people created and hosted this event and the people who I have met like Ashlea that helped me so very much with the struggles that were so graciously efficiently and kindly remedied during this meet up
    Blessings to you all

Good but awfully elementary. But that said, I always learn one thing I didn't know.

I'm tied up with a client in John's Creek I probably won't make it tonight. Is the 8/13 meeting basically the same content?

Sorry to miss you. Next month's topic will build on this one.

"Share your biggest struggle and burning question."i'm a real newbie to this may not know enough to even ask a specific question but I'll start with this I have a site that was created and abandonment way I have pictures that won't load I believe on a PC but seem to load okay on a Mac-based product

Shane -- that main image was loaded as a PDF, which isn't intended for that kind of use. If you change it to a jpg and reload it, it should work well for all users. Give it a shot and we can chat tomorrow night if you're still having issues with it.

Specific to my own new website, I'm interested in the MailChimp plugin and options...also how to determine best size for new images that need to be uploaded to page gallery and ready to appear at several different sizes.

    1 · July 8

    • Mickey M.

The MailChimp plugin is pretty slick. Not super-customizable, but easy to use and does a nice job. For image galleries, they're different every time but there are some fun tricks in Chrome to help find those sizes. We can show you tomorrow. See you then!

What is the cost of the meetup?

    • Kathy D.

No cost for this one, Kelly.

Guys - I plan to show you my website (in progress, using the Avada theme) and ask for your input & advice on a few things. Thanks! (Also, okay if I bring along something to eat since it's dinnertime-ish -?)

    1 · July 8

    • Kathy D.

Great plan, Su. It's okay to bring something to eat.

How do you go about finding the right theme for a client? I'm working on my 1st project. I found a theme that could work but I feel like it takes some trial and error to determine whether a particular theme is going to work out. Would you agree?

    June 24

    • Mickey M.

I vote that you find the right theme COMPANY first, then see what themes will solve your needs. Using a reputable company (StudioPress, Woo, ElegantThemes, etc), and using them consistently, will make your life much easier.

Some Key issues I have with wordpress -
    - how to speedup the loadtimes of an existing site
    - how to protect/secure the site
    - how to increase the memory size used for plugins
    - how to update a new version of a theme without reinstalling the theme each time

    June 24

    • Mickey M.

Kristie -- These are great questions and will be good to discuss at the Meetup. Some short answers to get you started:
1 - Speed: Reduce image sizes, remove some plugins (if possible), use a quality host, perhaps look at a caching plugin.
2 - Protect: Plugins such as Sucuri and WordFence are good ones to start with.
3 - Memory: Not sure what you mean here...
4 - Update Themes: Research "child themes", which were created to solve this very issue.

      June 24

  • Claudia A.

Kristie, on your last issue, I was told to use a plugin called Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades but have not tried it yet. I am always nervous about updating a theme especially because of the customizations to innate image files as well as css, php etc. Let's run this by the techies at the meet up.
