What the heck is Multisite and how do I use it?

Get the full scoop on what a WordPress Multisite network is, how to create one, why you would want one, and the best ways to use one. Bonus topics may include: setting up a WP Network for local development, building a social network with BuddyPress, and how to use a network to setup a secure client demo site. As always, if you're interested in presenting on any part of this, just let us know!

As a follow-up, I mentioned to Topher (before we both had to duck out early... sorry!) that the only real snag I ran into installing and setting up a 4-site multi-site was the domain mapping at the hosting level... Just confirm with your host (or within your c.p.) that you have a good bead on where settings for directing domains to either your sub-domain or your sub-directory setup within the multisite install. Could have alleviated a few headaches & some delays with a bit of foresight!

Very Informative. Good Presentation and applications. A little fast paced between setup sequences making it difficult for a few other people less experienced with WordPress installations.

I learned a lot about how to install, configure, and use a WordPress Network. Brian and Topher did a great job sharing their demos, caveats, and plugin recommendations, and answering questions.

I know that Network/Multisite makes administering multiple sites much simpler, but I'd also like to talk about the potential pitfalls, such as the shared database getting corrupted, or a code problem in one site bringing down the others. Maybe these fears are unfounded, or maybe there are even more issues I haven't thought of. I'd like these to be part of the discussion.
