Bulgarian wrestling festival

From: Peter H.
Sent on: Tuesday, May 28, 2013 2:03 PM

This weekend there will be a big Bulgarian festival at Bisse Woods in Elk Grove Village. As part of this they will run a small wrestling tournament. This is a typical Bulgarian folk event unlike any tournament you may have participated in. There are only 2 weight classes -- over and under 80 kg. You have 5 minutes to pin your opponent; other than that freestyle rules are used. There is no cost to enter, everyone gets a T-shirt and there are cash prizes. For more info please call Nicolay Vasilev at [masked]-3882. Below is the email he sent me regarding this event. Although it asks you to register by May 24 I believe you can just show up.

Folk wrestling “Bulgarian Festival 2013”
Official organizer sponsor AmeriFreight Systems
1. The tournament will take place on June 2nd (Sunday) at 1pm in the Busse Woods Park, Elk Grove Village, IL 60017. (On the South-west corner of the Arlington Heights Ave and Higgins Road intersection)
2. The wrestlers will be divided in two categories: under and over 80kg. If enough children candidates are willing to wrestle, children’s wrestles will be held.
3. The fights will take place on a wrestling mat for 5 minutes. Clean win will be considered after pinning the opponent (The opponent has to be held on his back at least for 5 seconds) or after forfeit (verbal or beating with a hand). If there is no winner after the 5 minutes, the wrestlers will fight until the first winning point. The wrestlers will fight barefoot and topless.
4. The wrestlers will fight in freestyle. Forbidden grabs and hold outside the rules. The referees determine and explain the fighters which techniques are allowed and which are not. If a forbidden technique is used, the referee stops the game.
5. All wrestlers willing to fight must enroll the latest by May 24th (Friday).
6. The winning award ceremony will take place immediately after the finals.
7. Prizes:
a. 1st place: A leaf crown, a medal and $150.
b. 2nd place: A medal and $100.
c. 3rd place: A medal and $50.
d. Fairplay trophy.
e. The same prizes will be awarded to the winners from both categories.
8. Before the start of the tournament and during the breaks freestyle and Greco-Roman style wrestling demonstrations will take place.
