This past weekend the Chicago Wrestling Club sent 10 wrestlers to the Folkstyle Veterans Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa. All placed in the top 5 and 5 wrestlers emerged as champions. This was by far the best result of any veterans team. In veterans competition there are 5 age groups ranging from A (25 to 32) to E (56 and older). Here are the individual results:

A 213 lbs – Ruslan Mukhamadiyarov – 2nd

B 167 lbs – Josh Laird-Wilson – 1st

B 187 lbs – Marc Bechler – 3rd

B 213 lbs – Octavius Bellamy – 1st

C 138 lbs – Joe Raia – 2nd

C 187 lbs – Mike Jasso – 3rd

C 213 lbs – Jeff Anderson – 1st

D 187 lbs – Mike Duffley – 5th

E 152 lbs – Werner Haag – 1st

E 187 lbs – Peter Haag – 1st

Unfortunately, it looks like Joe Raia will be out for a while. After winning his first match he tore his ACL during his second match, losing narrowly. He was unable to finish his third match and had to injury forfeit. It’s not clear when he will be back.

Congratulations to Ruslan on his first folkstyle competition ever. Ruslan is a greco specialist but has been trying his hand at other styles lately.

Also, Werner Haag weighed in at 138 lbs but had no opponents so he bumped up to 152 to get some matches. After winning the E division he challenged the winner of the D 138 division to an exhibition match and pinned him in the second period.

Our next big tournament will be the Chicago Wrestling Festival at Navy Pier on Saturday June 4, 2011. We will need plenty of volunteers to help out at the freestyle event, as well as wrestlers to compete. More information can be obtained at the World Sports Chicago web sitest.aspx
