Chicago Wrestling Club has huge success at Veteran's Folkstyle Nationals

This weekend 6 wrestlers from our club went to the Universty of Northen Iowa in Cedar Falls to compete in the Veteran's Folkstyle Nationals. Five of the six were crowned champions!

At 286 A (25-32) Ruslan Mukhamadiyarov went 2-1 with two pins. Ruslan didn't bother to cut down to 213, his normal weight, but was fortunate that his opponent was also a 213-pounder who had failed to make weight. After cementing his victory Ruslan went on to wrestle the same opponent in two exhibition matches, first in greco and then in freestyle, winning both.

in 213 B (33-40) Octavius Bellamy also went 2-1. Two other wrestlers in his bracket also went 2-1, but Octavius won due to tie-breaking criteria, as one of his victories was a major decision. His only loss came in overtime and was controversial, as the ref failed to award him an escape point that we all thought he had earned.

At 213 C (41-48) Jeff Anderson went 2-0 with a major decision.

At 187 C (41-48) Borys Kulich went 3-0. He avenged his previous year's lost to Rich Tado in a close match.

At 187 E (56 and over), Peter Haag went 2-0, including a pin.

At 152 A (25-32) Alai Ibraev wrestled in his first folkstyle tournament. Unfortunately, the other competitors were all bigger than Alai, some of whom had cut down from over 160, and it showed, as Alai went 0-2.

Thanks to Terry Harris and Bill Gant, who came to support the team. Bill is still recovering from a knee injury that is healing very slowly. Otherwise he would have been wrestling as well.

Best wishes also to Joe Raia, who was registered for the tournament but reinjured his knee and will be undergoing another surgery soon. Joe initially injured the knee at this tournament two years ago and was training and recovering well from his previous surgery when he hurt himself again recently.
