Networking with other writers, exchange writing ideas, practice forms of writing outside my comfort zone, and get some lively discussions. And if possible, also meet local journalists, publishers, and filmmakers to expand my professional network.
I write mainly features: travel writing, profiles and art reviews are my forte. I also wrote advice briefs in personal finance. I was a TV journalist for awhile, so I did some writing for TV and a documentary film as well. I'm trying to write fiction but currently overwhelmed with a novel whose subject I am not yet able to research in detail.
I used to write around 6000 published words per month as a freelance writer back home in Indonesia, but I haven't been doing that since I moved to NZ two months ago. Due to my studies, obviously I'm doing a lot of academic writing. I want to make more time writing things I actually love to write about, i.e. feature articles and fiction, but am still trying to figure out what works as I work on my studies and build my social network in my new place.
I'm still writing for Indonesia Expat magazine back home on a freelance basis. Am looking for freelance writing gigs in NZ and I think this meet up could help me learn where to start as I navigate the local media. Other than that, I'm also working on some fiction--my own novel for eventual publication, and a friend's as a ghostwriter--but these projects are currently on the back burner due to other commitments.
I'm a journalist from Indonesia, currently studying Master of Development Studies at VUW. In the future I also hope to publish fiction and write documentary films.
