Point of View: Head-hopping is so passé

According to author/newspaper editor Susan Bryant, “You can’t play God. There are limits in fiction writing, believe it or not.” (with regard to Point of View). On Wednesday, March 6th at 6:30 pm, Susan will discuss how to limit and simplify characters’ point of views to avoid the widespread pitfall of head-hopping that often stymies new fiction authors.  The meeting is free and open to the public. Contact Rik@PublishingSuccessOnline.com for more information.

Top 3 things participants will learn:

1. Explanation of POV/perspective and head-hopping, which probably is the biggest unpleasant surprise for new fiction writers; you can’t do anything you want even though it’s fiction.

2. Why such “rules?” Sticking with one perspective in a scene mimics reality (we can’t read other people’s thoughts in real life), lends stability, decreases confusion, makes it less jarring, develops the character, and allows the reader to become more emotionally attached to the character.

3. How to avoid head-hopping and particularly egregious instances such as a character falling unconscious or dying and the another character immediately taking over the storytelling in that scene.
