The Philadelphia Writers Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

It's a new location, The Church is Old First Reformed Church (historic!) and is located on the southeast corner of  4th and Race. The social hall has more than enough room and no one will be there to bother us. The best way to get there is to go into the main courtyard and then go around the side of the building. There is a large door on the 4th street side and that is the social hall entrance.  It's a new location for a very established writers group with a 10 year history.  Check out the "Pages" tab at the top of this page for more info.

Thanks for the tip and the encouragement, Elizabetta. Hopefully it'll help to improve my decision-making in other areas as well. Though when it comes to me, there's never any guarantee.

Thanks Elisabetta( I'm sorry for spelling your name wrong last time). And yeah, even though I did stray slightly from the advice you offered, I think that little bit of craftiness definitely helped to jump-start me out of a pit of stalled procrastination to where I could finally decide.(submitted it a couple days ago)

Great news Joshua! :-) looking forward to reading it! I am glad my advice helped you to find your own way to decide! :-)

As always, I enjoyed the group. I would suggest we each throw in $2 or $3 to purchase a couple of large fans and donate them to the church. The meeting room is just toooooooooo hot.

What an interesting group! The critiques were fascinating. Cannot wait until next month when I will have the pieces for review.

Had come within an opening and slamming of my car door of not joining everyone down at the restaurant afterwards, but then after having pounded my steering wheel in response to the voice inside of me that was relentlessly shouting, "What makes you think you can fit in with them, huh!" I then squeezed my eyes closed and repeated to myself, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." So then having made it to the restaurant, and as I sheepishly glanced around at the seven or so of you seated there, a feeling of intimidation and depression abruptly overtook me even more intensely. And with my mind wandering and with me struggling to calm my breathing, it took all the strength I could muster to not in that instant bolt from my seat and shoulder-shove the door in desperation. But now looking back, I'm just thankful that I made the choice to leave my apartment that afternoon, to head out to a new place, and to meet some new interesting people.

Thanks. And yeah I've actually already gone ahead and submitted three different excerpts to him since I wasn't able to decide on a single story that would fit within the 4000 word range. And before sending him those three(that each have a synopsis attached) that I'm pretty sure won't be permitted even though they collectively are fairly close to that range, I sat here in front of my laptop for a couple hours obsessing over which of the three I thought would generate the least amount of criticism. But I still wasn't ever able to decide.

Hi Joshua! I am very happy you came and stayed AND submitted something! :-) it is hard to join a new group, I have been in your shoes many times, as I am sure others, too! But it gets better and better! My suggestion to decide would be to lay your excerpts in front of you (or just write their title on three pieces of paper - i still think old-school), close your eyes, mixed them, till you don't know which is which and pick one! i am sure it will be the right one to discuss now! :-) looking forward to reading more from you!

WOW! Might be my favorite meetup EVER. You'd think Frank Rizzo was still mayor judging by how emotional folks got over Doug McKnight's piece, "Rizzo." We all made up over beers later. ;-)

And THANKS to everyone for the helpful reviews of my sci-fi story, "PLANETBALL!" (Steve, you're a homicidal maniac! lol)

    WHOOSH!!! lol

Remember controversy sells! Going to commit plenty of homicide, spill blood and actually visit many of the sites of my novel in person for my new novel in progress!

I'm hearing all of these wonderful comments, and it just makes me so anxious and eager to finally attend a meeting. Every time I think I can make it, something gets in the way. So frustrating!!!

Joined just in time for this meet up and was very happy I dragged myself out of the apartment. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm both scared and excited to eventually submit something. I need all the help I can get! Glad to find a diverse group of people who are friendly and serious about writing!

I still haven't made a meeting, so I'm not sure how all of this works. Am I supposed to be given readings ahead of time? Like a workshop? If so, I never get them.

Good speaker, about 30 people and 6 new people. Good eats and drinks afterwards at the 2nd Street Cafe.
