The Philadelphia Writers Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

It's a new location, The Church is Old First Reformed Church (historic!) and is located on the southeast corner of  4th and Race. The social hall has more than enough room and no one will be there to bother us. The best way to get there is to go into the main courtyard and then go around the side of the building. There is a large door on the 4th street side and that is the social hall entrance.  It's a new location for a very established writers group with a 10 year history.  Check out the "Pages" tab at the top of this page for more info.

Can't say I was thinking about the group from beautiful Portland, Oregon this weekend, but I can say nature can be inspiring to writing for sure.

      Especially rainy nature

Had no rain whatsoever this time. It was great weather with highs in the 80's and nights in the 60's, just perfect.

Thanks again to all for the close reading and insightful criticism! You can find more of my writing at www.chrismohnacky.com.

I just want to apologize for being so immature and allowing my intensely competitive ego to interfere with me being able to keep things in perspective and appreciate the real value of showing up. Since even though my writing mentor had told me ahead of time to not take any of your criticisms personally since everyone's different and that I should just take it for what it is, I still wasn't able to maintain that "ho-hum-whatever" receptive mindset. So as I sat there cursing you and myself while you criticized, all I heard and saw were competitive threats determined to not let me win.

Hey, what hero ever made it to the end of the quest without hardship? And if he didn't have a little hardship, would we have liked reading about him? Probably not! Challenges help you grow! I know I have a hard time not taking things personally too. Kudos to you for having the guts to submit a work! :)

Strong turnout on a rainy autumn afternoon, with the number of attendees within two standard deviations of our monthly mean! Thank you to the four writers who submitted interesting pieces that generated lots of fruitful discussion! Thank you to Tony for leading the Beatnik-style poetry jam! For the afterparty, about twelve of us hipsters gathered at the groovy Race Street Cafe to continue the lively discussions of art, writing, and life, and afterwards three of us drifted southward for yummy gelato at nearby Capogiro. A very successful Meetup, as always!

Bummed that I missed the poetry jam. Can I still be a hipster even if I'm not a beatnik? lol

I will be travelling from King of Prussia via train, which may take about 90 minutes with stops to downtown. Since I can't leave before 1 PM it might be more reasonable to wait until next month. Not counting myself out yet...

Illness in the family prevents me from attending, as much as I'd like to. Have a productive meeting.

Hi folks who go out after the meeting: I'd really like to hang next time; is it wheelchair-accessible? Is it wheelchair accessible to the extent some kind people could boost me up stairs?

Julie, It's easy if we sit outside, but I can't remember if it's 3 or 5 steps to get in. But heck, I'm willing to man one side of you no mater how far. :-)

Seems Meetup.com is having another "upgrade." Among the "improvements" are: inability to edit posts if you made a mistake and forcing you to put web links in HTML code instead of just pastingtext in e-mail. Nice going, geniuses. :-/

We take any kind of writing pretty much-fiction, non fiction, poetry, any genre...

That's fine if you're a bit late - we only ask that you come in as quietly as possible so as not to disrupt the conversation. Thanks!

I have a commitment at noon. Is it ok if I'm late? Also, I don't write fiction. I assume that's ok. I'm turning an old blog into something else, a book. Would love your feedback.

I have another commitment until 1 pm, so I may be a little late. Looking forward to meeting fellow scribes.

Am in the process of publishing a book on kindle of pictures with poems. I look forward to learning new ideas about publishing and sharing any insights I can contribute to the discussion.

Hello - Happy to join, but unfortunately will be traveling on Oct. 4 (almost never go anywhere, so wouldn't you know I finally do, and on a day when I could be meeting all of you. So sorry. Will be there in November. Taking the train from Lansdale, then I guess a bus to 4th street. Best bet. Well, see you then. Best, Anita

Sorry I missed the last meeting. I was out of town but plan on attending October's meeting. This will be my first time. Any insights of what to expect. Shall I bring a piece to critique?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
