I did mention a couple of books
- Writing & Selling Your Memoir: How to Craft Your Life Story So That Somebody Else Will Actually Want to Read It by Paula Balzer
- The Memoir Project: A Thoroughly Non-Standardized Text for Writing & Life by Marion Roach Smith
Memoirs were described both as a collection of memories that portrayed a historical and personal perspective. Others interpreted a memoir as an author sharing an excerpt from one individuals point of view.
I think a memoir can take on either shape - one thing it's not is a recanting of one's entire life story, which is best left to the rich and famous.
Just Because it Happened - doesn't make it interesting. Whether that's to entertain, inspire, or educate - it must have purpose.
Be truthful and honest - I could get flack for this one, but in my mind it means 'write from the heart'
There's just as much of a need for plot, scenes, dialogue, story structure, etc. to make a successful memoir.

Is there any way I can catch up on what was discussed for memoir writing? I would have loved to be there today-- I share your passion for writing and I have a life-long desire to be a published author and write my memoir one day. I hope to be able to meet you at our next meeting.

I will try to give you a quick run down of what i remember. We talked about how a memoir is different from an autobiography because it takes a slice of life instead of the entirety of one's life. We also discussed that the reader has to empathy with what is written( maybe in terms of setting up a vivid scene or something that the reader can place themselves in the character's shoes.) At one point, it was mentioned that writing a memoir is more about recording your life for personal reasons rather than making money. Someone mentioned that memoirs tell about a certain time from a certain perspective and that they aren't always 100% factual but are based on the authors experience and the author's version of the events. Beth Lee Browning mentioned some good books to read about writing but i cannot remember the titles, so i would contact her if you want them. that is about all i can recall. I hope that helps
That is a great start. Thanks for the epilogue William, much appreciated!
At first I thought it was going to be a small group but 32 made it. 8 new people. We discussed memoir writing in craft chat and had 4 critiques of members' works.
This was my first time attending Writer's Meetup Group and I wanted to say it was a great and welcoming experience. Seeing others on the same path with the same passion for writing, did a great deal for my self-esteem as a writer. Thank you Julius, Steve and Gene for putting together such a good event. Hope to see you all next time.
I sorry missed today's, but I was sick. Hope to make it next time

I'm looking forward to joining this writer's group. Typically, how long are our meetings? Today, there is another coinciding event happening and I may not be able to make it. If not, I hope to make it either Nov/December. November is election month, so I may not be able to meet up until afterwards. All in all, I hope to see you in the near future and I love this topic--memoir writing! Would there be any way I can "catch up" with notes on this from our meeting?
Good Day Everyone,
Good Day Everyone, I apologize for my absence due to a hectic schedule. Hope to meet and greet @ the next meeting. Steve H.
Hey! I'm going to try and make it out today. I'm very glad there is a serious writer's group here and look forward to meeting with you.
I also have to miss this month.
Sorry to miss this month -- I'm knee deep in work, but hope to attend next month.

This will be my first time as well. Do we also read at this event and if so would it be easier to bring extra copies of what we plan on reading?

You have to have attended at least one meetup before we'll review your work. When you're here, put your name and e-mail address on the sign-in sheet that will be passed around; then you can send the Organizer, Julius, a copy of the work you want reviewed (up to approx. 4,000 words).
BTW: We don't read the works alound except on special occasions.
I'd like to know how I know where exactly the group will be, because I've never attended before. Is there someone I can contact on Saturday if I cannot find the group? Thanks.

Same, I don't want to get lost and miss the group...
This is also my first time attending, and I'm not really a writer, just looking to make some new friends. Hope to see everyone there!
