publishers to avoid

Hi,

I have yet to make my first meeting, but I did come very close on February 4th. Does anyone know anything about Dorrance publishers - like do they try to get an upfront fee? They expressed a tentative interest in my memoir but not until it is finished. I still plan to look for an agent but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Jeanne,

Avoid them like a plague! They will cost you $$ to get your manuscript published.

Jeanne (and everyone else):

For future reference, the two best resources for this kind of question are:

The Absolute Write forums (www.absolutewrite.com/forums); and
Preditors and Editors [sic] (http://pred-ed.com/...)

The best way to find information, in my experience, is just to Google "Absolute Write [x]" and "Preditors Editors [x]," where [x] is the name of your publisher, editor, or whatever - in this case [x] = Dorrance.

Here's what they have to say about Dorrance:

AW on Dorrance: http://www.www.absolu...
P&E on Dorrance: http://pred-ed.com/pe... (a little more than halfway down)

Sorry to say it looks like they're a vanity press - meaning their business model has them making a profit from the money you pay them, not from selling books to your readers. Keep trying!

Second that. Absolute Write is probably one of the most useful tools I ever ran across. It led me to my first publisher. Their list of Worst Publishers and Agents is invaluable.

My first 2 manuscripts were accepted by Publish America. When they e-mailed me the contract. I found I would have to pay them to promote my books. I did not sign the contract. Does anyone know of their publications. I think their books are too expensive. I just put the books on Amazon as e-books for now.
