The Philadelphia Writers Meetup Group Message Board › Hugo panel this Friday at Phila. Science Fiction Society
The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society brings in a professional writer, artist, editor, or some other kind of mover and shaker in the Science Fiction genre, nearly every month.
Friday, July 19th 8:30 pm at International House 3710 Chestnut St.
The movies have their Oscars, TV has the Emmys, but for science fiction and fantasy, the big awards are the Hugos. Given each year at the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon), these awards are voted by the reading and viewing public who are members of the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). But while we may hear about a few of the winners, we frequently don't hear about the other, often equally good work that was nominated.
To help us identify the best and have fun in the process, the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society (PSFS) each year runs a Hugo Review Panel which discusses the fictional works nominated for Hugo Awards. Panelists not only briefly review and rank all items in these categories but then they hash out their differences on them and they don't hold back! The evening culminates with the Best of Show and Dragon (the one that dragged on the worst) from each panelist's view. Come prepared to jot down ideas of what appeals to you! Each panelist and alternate reads approximately 3,000 pages of written material (short stories, novelettes, novellas and novels) and views 15-20 hours of short-form and long-form dramatic presentations. The purpose of the PSFS Hugo Review Panel is to enable representative readers/viewers of the fictional works to discuss all fictional nominees, not just those which win the awards (which will be announced during this year's Worldcon) and to encourage members of the audience to read and view as many of the nominees as possible.
