I'd vote for Central Library too, if they'd let us do it every week.   But true, no food there, unlike Whole Foods, whose parking lot is much more limited in size.  Depends what influence is more important to arouse your latent muses, books or food.

One thing too, that Whole Foods, and Balston have over the library and North Side Social is parking lots attached/affiliated to them. Cause I know some people drive to work and then drive to the meeting.

I'm gonna vote with Jen on the Ballston Common space.  It is depressing.  I hope we can find another solution.

I don't think Whole Foods or the old Murky Coffee are out, Jen.  We're still in the booting around ideas and locations phase, as far as I can tell :)

What do you think of Central Library in Arlington?

So are Whole Foods and the old Murky Coffee out? I think Clarendon is much better than Ballston. Sure the mall is empty, but it's sooo depressing.

I've noticed the other group, about ten people. They have a table at the "I Thai" restaurant every Wednesday. That's at the extreme north end of the food court. The south end is always the quietest, and I think that would be our best bet.

Sounds good to me, too. I know Alexandria is fine, but once you add a bus/trolly to the metro ride, it just takes forever longer, especially since the busses run less and less frequently/reliably as the night progresses...

Thats true, and its still really close to Clarendon if people want to go out to more familiar haunts. I do worry that it might be loud. But they dont provide vouchers like pentagon city mall so you wont have to worry about tour groups like you have at p-city mall. However, I also know that another meetup group meets in the food court on wednesday nights, from 6-8.

Food court at Ballston. Yes, it's very convenient (and the beer is right upstairs). I'm there once or twice a week. The food court is pretty empty by 6:30pm or so. We should confer with mall management in advance, however, just to make sure that everybody is on board with this. We wouldn't want them to get officious on us or anything. Since the mall closes at 9pm, we'd probably have to be physically out of the building by that time. (A few restaurants in the mall have separate entrances and stay open later -- but the food court doesn't).

the food court (basement level) of the ballston mall
-- it's metro accessible (ballston metro stop in arlington)
-- you can walk to it from the ballston metro without ever going outside by walking through alta vista towers and the NSF foundation walkways.
-- it's free.
-- if you want to eat and drink, you can and there's tons of options since it's a food court, but there's absolutely no obligation to buy food/drink if you don't want to.
-- there's always plenty of room for meetings like this.
-- no permission is required from ballston mall management.

We knew this day might come, but now it is official. Renovations at the Clarendon Barnes & Noble will take away all currently unused space at the store. Which means there will be no meeting space for us (or anyone else).

Our store contact tried to wrangle us some space in another area of the store, but there just won'd be any way to make it work, at least not in the short term.

So...we're looking for a new home - for the summer at least.

If you have any ideas, please post them here and we'll look into them. We're trying to find space that is Metro accessible and free.

We could end up returning to a coffee shop environment where attendees are silently expected to buy a drink or snack, and that would be fine, but to go to a full service restaurant may be impractical.

July 7th will be our 183rd and final meeting at B&N - let's hear those creative ideas about a new home!

MK
