hi michael and awgroupies..

just wanted to second your observation that a lot of good ideas were expressed last night. and i wanted to agree with those who saw benefit in a variety of formats for our meetings. i think a lot of members are interested not only in 1) critiques of their own work, but also 2) improving their craft and 3) working on the business of writing and getting published -- via networking with editing/publishing professionals from the outside and having presentations on topics of interest, as in the past (i.e, promoting your work; finding an agent; choosing markets; self-publishing).

one idea from last night that struck me as viable and promising: an anthology (or two or more) of group members' works. in the age of easy and very low-cost digital self-publishing, this would be a great way for members to get their work onto the kindles of readers, especially for those members just starting out. there is enough talent in the group to assemble fine anthologies, say, of youth fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and other short stories (perhaps with a washington, dc connection?). and we even have artists to possible design cover art! the whole exercise could also provide hands-on experience to group members in the new wave of publishing.

looking forward to great things in the new year!

Subject: [writers-499] Group Activity in Response to 12/19 Meeting

Great meeting last night with some really good ideas and suggestions for how to help the group keep moving forward.  Thanks to all who participated - in person, or on the boards and through email!

So in response to some of the discussion items here are a few of the actions we've taken this morning.

1) Purged 100+ inactive/unpaid members.  (After all, must make room for all the Resolution Writers who are coming.)  ;-)

2) Confirmed the auto-message to new members has current information.

3) All new members are asked to provide a brief introduction and to answer the question: "What are you writing or interested in writing?"  It is now mandatory.(It's always been optional - no more.  You may want to take this opportunity to ensure your profile is up to date.  And please do put a picture or at least a cartoon likeness of yourself up.  It's helpful, welcoming, etc.)

4) Created a blank page for Members to list their website and blog.  I don't see a way to make it its own TAB on the site.  But if you click the tab PAGES, you'll see it's there.  At the moment, only I can edit the page.  We may change that.  But for now...please send me via email, your blog or author's web address and give a 10 word description of what it is.  For example "Author site." or "Blog About Ethnic Restaurants." That sort of thing.  I'll try to organize it simply alphabetically by member's last name.

That's it for now...need to get back to work--11 days to meet my deadline.

Thanks again.
