It was a great weekend!~

By the way, I have had the following song by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys going through my head ever since the weekend. There are many reasons for this. Onjuku is a surfing town and the song evokes surfing images. Also, whenever I travel in Japan I feel that I am living a dream, being in this land so far away from New Jersey. The most important reason I want to share the song with you all is that I think it's related to the exercises we did over the weekend about creating a sense of place. The lyrics not only evoke the mythical imagery of Southern California but also how Brian Wilson feels about them. There are also references to the history of the Beach Boys as a band, things that fans and many people know about. I think the lyrics are both general and specific and there is even a zen-like spirituality about them. Plus, the melody and arrangement are just beautiful!

The song can be found at the following link:

and because they are not available online, I typed up the lyrics from the CD booklet (which of course I had to run out and buy!):

Southern California (by Brian Wilson/Scott Bennett)

I had this dream singing with my brothers,
in harmony, supporting each other.

Tail winds, wheels spin down the Pacific Coast.
Surfin' on the A.M., heard those voices again.

Chorus:
In Southern California dreams wake up for you
and when you wake up here you wake up everywhere.

In the flow of the ocean and warmth of the rays
her music in the air and in the waves

The wind chimes, laughter rhymed,
we had nothing but time.
In Southern California I heard the voice of my mind.

Chorus:
In Southern California dreams wake up for you
and when you wake up here you wake up everywhere.

Bridge:
Oh, it's magical living a dream.
Don't want to sleep. You might miss something.

Oh, it's magical. I'm glad it happened to me.
Nodded off in the band room; woke up in history.

Surfers' silhouettes, the sun went into the sea.
As we headed home, we drove into a movie.

Love songs, pretty girls, didn't want it to end.
Tried to slow down the motion so it could move us again.

Chorus:
In Southern California dreams wake up for you
and when you wake up here you wake up everywhere.
