Critique and writing -- ADVANCED to intermediate writers only

This is an intermediate to advanced writing group only and we welcome new attendees. However, if you are unsure about your writing ability, please attend a few sessions, listening to the critiques, and the discussions. This will help you to determine where you are in your writing.

If you are not at this level (and you know it :) then please attend our Thursday night session for help and critiques of your writing.

Agenda --

Regulars have first priority for critique. Submissions should be 1200 to 1500 words in Time Roman, 12 pt, double spaced. If we have time we can do more, but only if we have time.

Bring enough copies for everyone. If you can't attend please remove your RSVP, that will save everyone from making copies for you. If you are attending, RSVP so we have enough copies.

If you are new to the group, please come a couple of times and participate in the critique before you bring pages. You'll see how we work and whether your skill set is in the right place.

Everyone who attends is expected to give a substantive critique. It is not enough to read through quickly, have no comments, and then expect an in-depth critique of your work  It is also not appropriate to critique for things you "like" or "dislike" or to tell individuals to "go read a book on grammar." This session is designed to give informative critiques as well as receive them. We all learn from critiquing and getting critiqued, no matter your skill level.

This is also not a forum to pitch your novel. We are not open to sales pitches or marketing. This is for writing, not marketing.

NOTE: Damon, and Roberta have agreed to help me host this one. So if any of us can make it this will be scheduled.

Suggestion - with 8 people coming, perhaps we can spit into two groups in the same room, work together for a time; switch at some point to mix it up. Just an idea. I can't last 6 hrs, this I know!

Barb... its something you need to decide. Is this group for you. I'd really have to split the group.

      March 16

  • Damon Smithwick

I doubt we split this week. Jeff D. is coming and those of us who know him have missed him for six months. You might be hard pressed to find a regular who doesn't want to sit in his group. ;) Another scifi guy at the table! Yay!

It's been so long I don't remember: Did I ever show you guys the coverage document I paid somebody to write last summer? It's nominally for the film industry (long story) but in substance it's a professional third-party synopsis of your novel. I'll bring it along Sunday if anybody wants to see it.

I saw it when you brought it into Agia Sophia, but that doesn't mean others might not like it.

    I need feedback on this:

"A murdered girl’s life energy is the only reason Daniel is alive. And now a desperate killer wants it back. If either of them survives, the world won’t."

140 character hook. What do you think?

That's pretty good! Bring it to the meeting and we'll all talk about our hooks, or work on making one.

Did anyone else notice that all of these comments were posted on next week's meetup? How'd we do that?

    March 9

    • Kameron

Opps - there was none listed on the 9th, two listed on the 16th.

  • Anita Romero

I'm coming in from DIA so I'll be late

Just so everyone knows, this week will likely start our efforts to discuss pitching and selling our books. I won't be bringing words, I hope to bring a query letter and a tag line.

    March 3

    • Damon Smithwick

I'm told this week doesn't begin our conference prep. ;) I exist in a state on uncertainty, like Heisenberg's cat. So bring what you want. If you bring a query letter or a conference item due to me, I'm sure we'll still look at it.

Let's talk about how to get everything ready for the conference ascwell

  • Roberta Crownover

I'll see you all tomorrow. Not sure if I'm bringing words. Draft one is finished and draft two is half done. I need to back away for now.
Perhaps a few pages on my other project?

Have a wedding to attend so I'll miss. Thanks for the critique on March 2nd, it was painful but helpful. Even though I'm not pitching, getting excited for PPWC! : )

Basically I went to critique with friends. They beat me with a stick, and were totally right to do so. I wrote a chapter that wasn't about the story, it was about the neat gizmos I'd dreamt up in my head for my universe. Spaceships and weapons and engines Oh my! But they pointed out that it wasn't a story I'd written. I had thought the chapter a bit clever beforehand, and they set me straight. Which pissed me off for a bit. I left wondering "Just what the hell am I doing choosing critique partners like this?" Becoming a better writer was the answer. I still have many beatings to go, I think.
