It's been a year, I think, since I organized an event for the hikers in the group. So here we go! --- Please read the updated description below ---- Meet at the Quabbin Resevoir, in central Mass, to photograph the fall foliage. We will take a 3 mile trail that is primitive, rocky in spots, and travels up and down hills. We will walk another 3 miles back the cars, for a total of 6 miles on mostly rough terrain. While we will travel slowly and take plenty breaks for photos, be aware this is an actual hike - not like other click and shoots where we just wander around locations. Please be in good physical condition, and plan for 5-6 hours of walking. Time: Meet Satruday, 10/24, 9 am, at Quabbin Park Directions: Will be sent to participants next week Please carpool! I will help organize this. It takes 2 hours to get to the park from the Boston area. So please plan accordingly and leave around 7 am. We cannot wait long if you are late. The Plan: Meet at the Winsor Dam lot at 9 am. We'll shoot the dam and resevoir for a half hour, and meet back at the cars at 9:30 to start the hike. The first part of the trail goes through birch and pine stands, and uphill, to the Quabbin summit. We'll spend time there and on the lookout tower, and have lunch around 12 pm. In the afternoon we will continue on the trail and return on the road back to the cars, stopping at Wood's Place, Enfield Lookout, Kordek Orchard, Winsor Memorial, and the Swift Spillway. Plan on being back in Boston no earlier than 7 pm. Required Gear: * dress in layers - to stay warm when stopping on the cool day * long pants for where the trail goes through narrow brush * comfortable hiking shoes or boots * pack a lunch, and bring snacks for the afternoon * bring 2 liters of water to stay hydrated * Camera There will be excellent photo opportunities - the rainy summer should result in an above average foliage year. Today we live in a society that is bombarded by visual imagery. Unfortunately, we receive very little education in the structure, form or content of images. This situation may leave us feeling ineffective in our ability to produce images or to decipher their more subtle messages. Visual Literacy is a first step for students interested in Photography , architecture, interior design, graphic design, art and art education, textile design, and journalism and mass communications to challenge this situation and to begin a serious exploration of the visual world, a world that is as complex and organized as the verbal world.
Visual literacy is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image. Visual literacy is based on the idea that pictures can be “read” and that meaning can be communicated through a process of reading. Visual Literacy investigates the ways we as a society communicate our beliefs and values through the artifacts we make. It enables people to explore the formal qualities of the visual world and to develop new sensitivities toward their visual environment. It brings Photographers an expanded awareness of their surroundings and an understanding of the potential for visual images and constructed artifacts to express their own ideas and observations about the world.
Join us for an evening of understanding an Image with Paula Tognarelli is the Executive Director and Curator of the Griffin Museum of Photography.
This is an open discussion , please bring your ideas to the meeting.

Learn About High Seas Photography with Onne van der Wal by Onne van der Wal Award winning nautical photographer Onne van der Wal has been shooting yachting photography for over 25 years. His much admired onboard photographs capture the action, intensity and excitement of sailing and racing yachts. Join him on Monday, October 19 at 7:00 pm as he shares some of his best images and tricks for making great photographs in the very challenging and equipment battering high seas environment. Onne will show many of his latest images taken all over the world in a variety of regattas; from classic to mega yacht racing, from islands scattered all over the globe, to cruising grounds near and far, with images taken from a helicopter and more. Onne will also discuss his workflow process from capture to conversion, delivery to client and print making. A brief overview of this daunting process will include his favorite photo software programs with tips on what has proven to be helpful and not-so-helpful. Once a professional sailor, Onne van der Wal, got his start in photography while sailing as bowman and engineer with the 1981-82 Dutch Whitbread Around the World Race team on the winning boat, FLYER. Onne is proud to be one of only 60 sponsored Canon Explorers of Light. Onne’s work is regularly published in sailing and travel magazines worldwide and his stock photos are represented by Corbis, Nature Picture Library and BlueGreen Pictures in the UK. For those wishing to push themselves beyond just taking a photograph and the approach of understanding the art of photography. This workshop challenges participants to make images that have more in common with painting than with photojournalism. The two day's major themes are color and light, and how they can transform the most mundane as well as the grandest of subjects. Banafsheh shares her passion for the creative possibilities of color and her techniques for maximizing its effect. Filters, film choice, exposure, color temperature, composition, and fine art are some of the topics we explore. The workshop begins with reviewing past work and sharing our photographic, artistic, and career goals. . Most of our time in the field is spent together, so that each participant can receive hands-on help with planning and making photographs on location. Expect the days to be long, intense, exhilarating, and rewarding as we learn to see the fall in a new, more intensely personal way. Cost per person $185.00+ tax The workshop begins by leaving around 7.00am to the west of massachussets. Cost includes all lodging, guided outings, transportati on. Cost includes breakfast.Lunch and dinner on your own. Participants must be in good health, capable of walking and carrying photo gear and be willing to try new things. Minimum enrollment = 3 Maximum enrollment = 5 IF wish to bring your own vehicule the price will be $155.00 per person. You will reserve the workshop directly through Boston Photograhy center on the web. thanks
